Initial impression was am 8, but after looking for a minute, I give this box a 7.

Thigh sizes are different and skin is not similar coverage on all.
Still looks good enough to dive in!!!

7- inconsistant sizing, and saucing as well as grill marks..needs more attention to details.

6
the two middle thighs are about twice the size of the other 4. The color is uneven from the top to the sides
The parsley is so sparse as to look like someone accidentally spilled some into the box.

The grill marks don't hurt or help it IMO.

If oyu have to turn in 6 thighs, buy 24. From that 24, trim to size (and pay attention to the skin) as best you can. Take the best 15 and cook them. From that 15, choose the best looking 6 that are the closest to the same size.

Shadows make this tough, but either way they're not bad. The grill marks help these, but of course those are grill marks, not barbecue marks (but that's a different story). Nice color. The skin could use a little more cleaning up.

6. Pieces are not even sized. Sauce not even on all pieces. Grill burn marks on a couple.

I am going to suggest changing the angle of presentation by having the bones face the side of the box versus the middle. Work on getting the skin to covert the meat and I am not crazy about the grill marks. 7

Meats are not uniformly blackened. Dark edges on lower right piece. Skins look thick and tough.

8 - for two reasons. Knobby ends could use some trimming to make the appearance more uniform. The garnish (meant to help with contrast) looks dry. Now, this could be (and probably is) from the light and shadows in the pix. However, I'd like to grab that lower right piece and give you my score for taste!

I would give the box a 6

From a presentation standpoint only I don't like to see grill marks on the chicken skin. Pieces are not the same in size. A few pieces the skin is pulled back showing the meat, and the sauce is blotchy and uneven on every piece.

Skin Skin Skin, for chicken appearance is all mainly about the skin.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
