Score 8 I usually don't like the light sauce on Chicken but sometimes it works.

5 - Sloppy sauce, wrinkled skin, bad color, can see the bottom of the box through the garnish, and I'm thinking of the napkin test for doneness....

Looks light, pieces too dissimilar, garnish hiding some parts - NOT judging the garnish, but if it hides the meat it makes it difficult to judge the appearance of the meat.

five(below average)--uneven color and sizing---maybe put the meat on top of the garnish

Score 7. This entry has many problems. The color of the chicken is unappealling and very uneven. The chicken does not appear to be placed into the box with much care. Some pieces are buried in the garnish. Overall the box appears sloopy.

7. Nice looking chicken but it's hidden in the garnish shrubbery. The cook needs to consider placing something below the meat to lift it and give it some height. The meat looks nice enough, but some pieces are darker/ligher than others, some show shrinking skin, etc.

A more even coloring would be preferred. A glaze maybe.

Bad box in every way. Looks under cooked. Pale inconsistent color. Meat buried in the parsley. If you are going to use greens, take time to make the box attractive. 5

I give it a 9 on the meat but not on the garnish :)

Bill,

KUDOS! on not allowing garnish to affect your score. Although this
cook, again, needs to make sure garnish does not cover the meat so we can judge it without any obstructions. Several judges on this page are commenting on this problem. They are right.

6
Blotchy sauce, uneven presentation in the box, mismatched pieces, varying colors of the pieces and a very thrown together look overall. It might taste awesome but in the box it looks mediocre at best.
I don't want to sound overly and needlessly critical obviously as the box obviously was done with a decent concept in mind. The pieces appear to have slid in the box. Building the box a bit sturdier would help solve that. It looks like it slid since there is so little parsley and the meat is actually on the bottom of the box instead of on something else.

7, no wow factor here, poorly placed chicken,to many sizes, s/n if you r going to use garnish to right

The chicken is not uniform in color. Some pieces are darker than others. In general the yellow color is not very appetizing to me. It looks like the pieces are also nestled down in the garnish a little which makes it harder to see the meet. I'd give this box a 7.

7 - Not much uniformity there and more care could have been taken to presentation. Still -- that looks like some tasty bird and isn't that whats really important?

Worthy looking bird, love that it's not covered in gooey sauce!

Sugg.
Man your greenery is killing your entry, too little in general, should cover bottom. Remove the pieces of parsley between chicken pieces as it's hiding the meat.
Your meat needs to be lifted out of the greens.

KUDOS! on an excellent garnish suggestion. Cooks - use garnish wisely so it DOES NOT COVER ANY MEAT. This distracts us judges from judging your meat.

6. Probably done but color seems too light to be appetizing.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
