Score 8. Nice entry, but the ribs look a little dry to be a nine.

Score: 8 - Ribs are cut and positioned well, color is good on the outside, not quite a 9 for me.

eight--they lack the 'sheen' needed for the next level

Score 8 This is a great set of ribs and I appreciate that it is 6 from the same slab. It is difficult to view the side of a rib. Adding 1 or 2 ribs on the side would move this to a score of 9

Nice uniform sizing on the ribs but the ends should have been attended to more. The ribs also seem to be cut on one side right next to the bone which is something we judges tend to complain about. The color is slightly suspect as well, almost appearing overcooked. This is a high 7 low 8 for me so I err on the side of caution and score it up to an 8.

8 - The ribs have a nice color and sheen, considering the photo is a bit washed out. I would like to see them placed more carefully, none of the bottom edges of the meat line up so they appear to be from different racks or at least repositioned within the same rack.

9 - Nice box!!
Suggestion; Some cuts are really close to the bone. You may sacrifice a rib or two however, getting a nice meaty rib on both sides will pay-off in the long run.

Nice looking spare ribs. The photo makes them look a little bit dry, but I think that is caused by the flash. Nice dark mahogany color to them. I'll give them a 9 in person if they looked dry I'd probably drop them to an 8.

Would score it a 7 as I would like to also see the side(s) of the ribs.

Looks fairly moist and ribs are similar, but bones should be in the middle of the rib not on one side. I like the pull-back on the bones. Just doesn't have that "POP" for a 9.

9. Can't see how much meat is on the bones, but appears nicely cooked. A couple of the ribs appear to have been cut differently than the others. That may contribute to differing scores among the judges.

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.
In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).
Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.
Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
