seven--rough cuts--uneven colour

7 - splotchy appearance, slices of different width,

Suggestion for cook: It is generally accepted that a full box makes for a better appearance than a not full box. Accordingly, if cook is going to present ribs piggy-back, suggest adding at least one more pair of ribs. Not only will it look better but the presentation will be more stable during handling. (I've seen ribs slide off such precarious perches during handling. Wider base is more stalbe.)

cbj/comp cook.I'd give it an 8 it just looks a little dry to me.

8 Very nice, maybe off a bit on uniformity, good color

Rough sauce. Ribs not cut uniform. Double row makes the box look 1/2 full. One row might have worked better. 8

8. I'll assume the box was jostled a bit and the sauce smeared. That said, the sauce seems a bit thick, but looks tasty and nicely cooked!

KCBS/CBJ - I would score it a 8 maybe a 7. Sauce is a little uneven and the box would look better filled. You could have put in 8 ribs.

Score it a 8, might have been better with less sauce.

7 They look god enough to eat but just not jumping out at me.

I would suggest that you try to develop a little more color to the meat, and find a way to apply the sauce a little more smoothly. It would also not hurt to put 8 bones in and fill the box. Lotsa meat always is more appealing. The garnish could be a little fuller, and I am a fan of turning in with the bone end down. Whichever end is at the top is what shines, and I think a big meaty bite of rib is much more appealing than a bone.

9 - Nice box.
Some will say the ribs are not exactly alike, not me if there's enough meat on both sides of the bone....

Score: 8 - Color is okay but a little light, pieces are arranged fine but sliced a little uneven, a little too much sauce for me but not bad.

Score 8. Nice entry and I would love to be able to see the side of the meat. I would caution the cook on the amount of sauce. These ribs are ok, but anymore and I would consider these ribs oversauced.

Clean box but no wow factor.

Bottom row the ends are not even across the bottom. The back row, the rib on the left is rolled inward. 8

7; possibly an 8 if seen in person. As far as the photo, the sauce is very unevenly applied, especially on the bottom pieces.

Overall, some good looking ribs. Might be just a touch oversauced, but I didn't deduct.

Looks pretty tasty! Saauce is a tad gloppy.
Could pay a little more attention to slice width and lining them up.
2 more ribs would go a long to improving the box look.
A 7 3/4 for me, at a contest I'd pry give you an 8 (cooks benefit of the doubt thingie)

Sugg.
Lack of full layer of parsley does not frame your meat. Not a deduction but not plus either.

Good looking rib box. Some judges will probably comment on the fact that there are just 6 ribs in the box. Whether there ore 6 or 60 it is to be scored the same way. The only issue I can see is that the rib on the lower right hand side is cut bigger than the rest and that throws off the symmetry. My eye is drawn to it and it just doesn't look right. Because of that I'd give the box an 8. Fix that issue and the box is a 9.

Having a hard time judging this one without a bit of a side view. Might be a 9 in person or as low as a 7 if they were to appear overdone

Score: 7

Ribs are not evenly cut. Some bigger cuts than others. Sauce appears sticky.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
