Brisket looks good but top slice looks over-done. I would still like to sample this entry. 8

6 Not well thought out on presentation, sloppy really, and sauce may be too much.

7. Lots of sauce and the last slice appears to be crumbling. Burnt ends at the top look alot different than those on the bottom. Box seems a bit sloppy, but I'm judging the meat.

7 - the meat, itself looks great. The presentation, however, is sloppy. Straighten out those slices so they lay uniformly, fix the back slice to do something with that torn-off piece on the right, and clean up the sauce glob on the garnish on the left edge, and you'd have a dynamite looking box.

7 sauce looks gloppy, can't see interior of meat very well, box looks rather crowded.

Looks like it may be over cooked

7 While meat looks good, arrangement is haphazard and poor. Slices are inconsistent. Garnish is poor.

Sloppy presentation. Meat looks moist but over sauced. Back slice has the end broke off. Layering the meat at an angle would cover that up and give the judges a better look at the meat. Burnt ends not lined up..........7

Score 8 - Good looking box and I believe this person can cook a brisket, but get some one else to arrange the box.

6--pretty sloppy but really want a taste of the meat!

Very appetizing looking, although box is a little crowded 8

score=7 meat uneven, sauce not attractive

5 - Over sauced, box looks cluttered, flat falling apart.

Kind of looks like the meat was just dropped in the box. Taking some time to arrange the slices neatly would help the appearance score a lot. Sauce on the chunks is uneven with some looking heavily sauced and other having no sauce at all. Go easy on the sauce, Specially with brisket. Let the flavor of the meat speak for itself. I'd give this box a 6 as it is average in appearance to me.

The meat looks tasty but a bit over sauced and sloppy. The meat layout is nice but I looks like everything almost fell out of the box. Left a gap in the garnish. I hate to score such good looking meat so far down. 7

the meat looks pretty good and appetizing; however, the presentation of the meat is very haphazard and it takes away from the visual appeal of the meat!

7 Nice try at a different presentation, but not uniform in display or thickness of slices. Does look appetizing.

Oh my not so goodness!!
Haphazard placement of meat. Pouring gravy all over everything (mostly) is never good eats. Ragged end cuts and broken slice just scream dry and overdone.
A 6 is a gift.

Sugg. Greens are really sparse, don't help the look much. And 1 piece of curly leaf lettuce????

A 5. Looks moist but layout ragged and slices on edge cannot be evaluated. Top slice broken.

8 - slices over sauced and are not uniform

7- brisket looks tossed in container, try layering the brisket

Dan KCBS CTC/MCBJ

Where to start. Broken slice in the back, random saucing, can't see grain. 7

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
