I'd give it an 8. The slices look great but the burnt ends arrangement is sort of haphazard.

John/KCBS

9 Great box! Very appetizing, not over sauced, full, etc., etc.

Score 9 - Great box

score=8 appears a little over cooked, burnt ends look delicious

six--chunks are very distracting --maybe taste better then it looks

9 - I want it all!!! Careful with the ragged ends on right...

8 possible 9 in person, brisket is one of the things I cook on the team, sometimes i get a little over critical.

TerryA

8 - the brisket looks appetizing, however the care taken when arranging the box does not look as though the cook took their time making sure the slices and chunks look appealing.

9 not sure how it could look any better!

Paul KCBS/CBJ

7 - Nice looking flat, ends look very dry, sloppy box placement.

Awesome brisket box, nothing but a 9.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

Ends are a bit willynilly. 8

Score 9. When scoring an entry I usually ask myself "how would I view this meat if it was served to me on my plate of food that I ordered in a restaurant." My response to that question and with reference to this entry would be " wow, does this look great. I guess I made the right choice."

Frank MCBJ

8. Right edge of slices are a bit ragged and the burnt ends look a little dry in places.

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/13/2013 04:07:33 am

8 - Brisket looks nice and moist with great looking bark. Some of the pieces could be "cleaned up" a little bit and have a little more "even-ness" in slicing. Other than that, I like the looks of it all. Nice work.

Lorne Rae

a 6. Look moist and nice color. But slices uneven in length and pieces are jumbled in many directions.

jaja01
1/13/2013 06:19:55 am

7 the sizes of the slices are uneven. The burnt end appear to be place in the box with not order. Also, the burnt ends are not of consistent size.

John - KCBS/MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MABA Judge

5 - the meat looks dry in generral and the box looks very disorganized.

Tom KCBS MCBJ
1/13/2013 07:37:54 am

Irregular cuts and sizes, Chunks look very dry and irregular, smoke ring looks unnatural.

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS

8 - but could have scored a 9; the presentation could have had a cleaner apperance. You must think about the WOW factor when your box is opened and presented to the judges. This is art work, not backyard cookout.

Slices look good. Meat looks moist. Burnt ends a little ragged and thrown in the box. Better job on the B/E would make it a 9.............8

Ron Haag

Burnt ends are a little sloppy 8

Tina C KCBS CBJ

8 slices could be more uniform as well as Burt ends. Color an moisture looks nice though

Great looking entry! I would love to sample this brisket! 9

Perfect looking smoke ring but we don't judge that. Great presentation. 9

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

7 - Burnt ends appear to be just dropped in without regard to placement; the front piece of brisket is ragged, as are a couple of others.

9 Looks awesome! I would love to try this!

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Wow! Beautifull smoke ring that I will ignore..looks well cooked and has great bark to make my mouth happy. How nice to see non-manufactured square ends, I'm takin two...
Only bad thing I can see is your slices could be lined up more evenly but in good consience I can't take any points away.
9 here.

Meat looks good, but a little dry. BEs look like they were just thrown into the box.

Dwain

6 - unevenly displayed.

Karen
1/14/2013 05:57:58 am

8- Looks pretty. The slices are not identical, they're different lengths.

Bill C. MCBJ/CTC KCBS

8. Burnt ends could be a little neater.

I know we don't judge the smoke ring. I'm just wondering, is it induced?

Glenn KCBS CBJ
1/14/2013 01:15:12 pm

Uneven slicing. Front slice appears to have a piece torn from the end. Burnt ends look very dry with no effort to present them. 7

I bet many others score lower but I can tell that this will taste good. Nice dark bark. You can see by the grain on the meat that this will be tender. Just wish there was some yummy fat on the slices

9 excellent display with burnt ends enhancing presentation

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
