8 or 9
Wish It had fat and no sauce/glaze but I'm not docking a team just because it's not the way I like it

Score 9. Great looking box. I can't imagine how you might improve on this box. Color is great, nice box layout, plenty of good slices and it looks very appetizing.

At first I thought there was sauce pooling at the edges, but I think it's just the lighting/picture.

I know we're not supposed to use smoke ring - but that's a lovely smoke ring!

Very appetizing. Just shy of a 9. Suggest making the slices equadistant one to the next, and don't cover the 1st slice so much with garnish.

I am presuming that the red hue is from the camera....
otherwise its a really good box. A little attention to keeping the slices uniform in thickness but thats really nitpicking. I would like to be able to turn in a box that pretty...9

Not too bad. I'll give it a 7. The slices are a bit too thick leading me to believe it was overcooked. I'm not too concerned at how red the meat looks because I think that might be a wrong setting on the camera producing that. The garnish and layout is nice.

I give the box a 7

Overall presentation is pretty good, but the bottom 4 slices are pretty thick and not even close in size to the rest of the slices.

I would suggest not even putting them in if they are not as good or better than the rest. Keep in mind as judges we judge the ENTIRE box so if you have 6 slices that would normally get a 8 and 4 slices that would get a 6 your OVERALL box will be a 7.

looks like good meat. Nice smoke ring as well as garnish. The overabundance of juices/sauce/au jus has a negative impact IMHO. I like to see the juices coming out of the meat, not slathered over it.

If you were able to expose a littel more of the sliced side instead of the top, I think it would help your scores.

7-8. Slices look a little too thick suggesting overcooked. Glaze is too thick for me. Probably a 7 but maybe an 8 if I looked at it in person.

Looks pretty good, but missing that "excellent" factor for me. Slices look much thicker than "pencil width" which is the standard for KCBS brisket slices.
Bark looks rather light and it appears that not much care was taken to the placement of the slices.
Still, I'd like a bite please!

I think the pic needs work. However if I dont think about that fake pink tint??
I give this a 9. I am an easy judge on appearance for sure. I do think the garnish is blocking the first slice to much as I can see all the smoke ring but I want to see a meat side lower down to see if the whole slice looks so good.

Meat: 9
Whole Box: 8
I would give it an (high) 8 overall.

The box could use a much tighter parsley frame. Frame it out tighter and the whole box is a 9.

But, again, from a just meat perspective, it would be a 9. The only comment with the meat is it looks lop-sided... but I realize it's the cut more than anything YOU did.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
