Score: 7 - Meat looks overcooked and dry, placement is rough, slicing is a bit uneven.

An easy 9 if it did not look so dry. Nice bark. The burnt ends might be fake, maybe not, but they look tasty. I see a little fat on the bottom of the first slice so this might end up not tasting dry. At an event last week, the judges at my table were fooled by a box that looked dry but when tasting it was not because it had some fat on it. Everybody loved it.
Like seeing that pepper rub bark on brisket

7 meat looks DRY

6. Meat looks dry, discolored, not appealing. Arrangement is not appealing. Meat looks to be cut thin.

9 Looks dry but not trimmed, actually has bark. The burnt ends look like true burnt ends

7. Meat looks dry and tough. Pieces look "crusty" on the right side. Might look better in person.

Score 7. The box looks sloppy and the brisket doesn't appear to have been placed into the box with any care. This cook might want to review some of the other boxes and see the neat and organized manner in which others make up their boxes. The brisket also appears to be dry.

Looks like these were cooked twice, and burnt one of those times. Those charred edges don't look like bark - they look like coal.

Get a more even cooking method or maybe rotate the meat.

The burnt ends pieces do look kind of yummy tho.

Score 9 The sauce has an interesting burn and I would like to taste it. I appreciate that all pieces are from the same piece of meat.

Meat looks a little dry... Probably is picture! Benefit of doubt goes to the cook... 9

The brisket looks a little dry. It also looks like not much care was taken when it was placed in the box. It looks burnt on the right end of the brisket as well. I'd give this box a 7.

Appears rushed. Not balanced in appearence. Moving the 2 bottom left in with the Upper left would be better here.

8 - This is the way burnt ends should look. Very nice but the slices look dry.

KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK
Good looking bark and burnt ends. Slices look dry and poorly arranged. Needs some burnt ends on top right to balance box. 6

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
