8. Uniform pieces and arrangement looks good. Splotchy sauce brought down the score 1 point.

8 - nice looking chicken, maybe a touch too much sauce

Mike Cannon

8 - Too much sauce.

Looks as though the sauce should have been a little hotter before glazing in the box.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, Nice box, a little heavy on the sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = Work on focusing the pictures.

Score 7 - A lot of sauce

Kendall - CBJ
6/3/2013 01:44:21 am

It may be the pic but the edges look a little burned and the sauce looks unevenly applied. I'd give it a 7 or maybe an 8 in person.

8 nice sizing and trim, look like sauced to much

poor picture, would probably score better in person

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Scott - KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8, very good. Very moist, evenly sized. Sauce a little unevenly applied.

Score 9. Reasons: Nice color and looks like tasty chicken. Caution again on amount of sauce. Some of the pieces are slightly heavy on sauce.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons: 9, The color may be a bit off but I'm gonna side with the cook on that every time. If your flavor profile results in this color then I'm good.

Suggestions/Comments: Hard to tell by the pic but the sauce might be a bit uneven. Otherwise this is one well put together box.

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 9. Great color, uniform cuts, and looks juicy.

Suggestion: Maybe would use a little less sauce.

9 can't add any remarks for improvement! pieces look uniform with evidence of bbq process and tasty!

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Portion control is very good. Sauce is a smidge heavy, color is a little light.
I'm in for a very good 8.

7 - picture really too dark for adequate viewing, but sauce looks to thick

Pete - KCBS
6/3/2013 05:33:19 am

8- Looks great, I like the slightly charred areas, makes it look more appetizing, as if it's cooked to taste good and not just look good.

COMMENTS - Some judges won't like the uneven application of sauce but it doesn't bother me, it's sauce not paint.

jean Krieske

I'd give those a 9, uniform size pieces, nice color,

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons = 8, near "perfect" except for the gloppy sauce! If we used decimal places, it would be 8.5!

Tom - CBJ w/ KCBS, MBN, NCPC & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 7, looks moist, but over-sauced and unevenly spread. Dark coloration of the sauce loses some appetizing appeal for me.

Suggestions/Comments = Spread sauce better

8. An attractive box; especially liked the leaf lettuce as the foundation. Great color for the chicken but the glaze is not even and the chicken skin is not uniform on at least two, possibly three pieces. Chicken looks moist and appealing.

9. Good layout, even spacing, even sizing and good even color, look moist.

Eggspert, KCBS CBJ

Score: 8
Comments: Size and shape are good, sauce is gloppy looking and uneven. Color is a little off, very brown not as appetizing as red.

Score/Reasons = 9, the chicken looks good. I like the little bit of canalization on the pieces.

Suggestions/Comments = Maybe just use a little less glaze. The meat looks just a bit glazed too much.

GeorgeB

Score/Reason = 5, I think I'm being generous with a 5. I really don't like the look of this one. Don't even want to taste it. They look sooty. The dark appearance is a turn-off for me.

Suggestions/Comments = a color other than blackish brown would be nice. Garnish is nice. I like the look of lettuce around the edges.

8 - tops of product looks heavy on sauce (photo a bit blurry) but chicken does look tasty, uniform presentation.

8....Good color. Matching size. Uneven sloppy sauce.

The little tail on the top left piece should have been cut off. Its distracting. The bottom of the top middle piece doesn't look like it has sauce on the bare part.

Suggestions/Comments = Try to keep the sauce/glaze a bit more even. Lower right piece has bare spots.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
