9 - Comment on other judges comments on a previous box. Appearance judging should not consider whether or not the skin might be rubbery. We should leave that to the taste and tenderness scoring since you can't tell until you bite it.

8 nice looking

Larry MCBJ

8 - Spotty sauce and the garnish partially covers the meat.

I'd give the box an 8. The chicken looks shiny but no over sauced. I'm not sure if the skin in rubbery or not. The pieces are not uniform

David - CBJ/KCBS
10/26/2013 01:35:38 am

Score - 9...good uniformity in size and color - not too much glaze

Comments: I was torn between 8 and 9 because you have a lot of garnish showing. I would recommend more chicken or somehow show less garnish

7. Pieces need to look more uniform

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and delicious!

Suggestions/Comments = Would have been nice to have the pieces more similar in size and shape, but that didn't affect my score..

score/reasons 9 looks great to eat consistant sauce

7...Light color makes it unappealing. Looks undercooked. Front left piece looks out of place.

The garish is hiding what we are suppose to judge. Cut back on the garnish and make the meat the focal point.

8 - nice color, looks tasty and tender, just a dark speck or two away from a 9.

Frank KCBS MCBJ, CTC

Score/Reasons = 8. Color is a bit light and uneven.

Suggestions/Comments = Even up the sizes a bit for a better score from some judges.

Score/Reasons = 9, this box looks good

Suggestions/Comments = the only suggestion is attempt to even up the bones

an 8. Good layout, look moist, nice color but lower left piece is way too big.

Dan KCBS CTC, MCBJ

9 nice looking box

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
10/26/2013 12:34:27 pm

Score = 7: Sauce and color is uneven and the meat is sitting down and making it hard to see.

Comments: Don't cover up the meat with the garnish if you are going to use it.

Ike, KCBS CBJ
10/27/2013 04:21:10 am

Score it an 8.

Could possibly be a 9 in person if the sauce isn't too thick.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
10/27/2013 06:22:04 am

Score 8. Cooks: elevate the meat out of the garnish so the entire entry can be seen and I believe you scores will profit.

Jacob
10/27/2013 08:52:33 am

7 maybe 8 in person light on color. I might use less garnish so we can see meat better

Randy English
10/27/2013 09:34:34 am

I would giv ethe box a 7. Not much color on the meat. Only the sauce to give it color. The size are not the same, too much variation.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
10/27/2013 02:57:33 pm

Score/Reasons: 7 - Can actually see the nice looking meat. Not smothered in gloppy gooey sauce. Pieces could be trimmed a bit better and more uniformly...not cookie cutter muffin tin style please. Pieces are buried into the garnish and are not as visible as they could be.

Suggestions/Comments: Without my nitpicking, this is a box of nice looking chicken. Trim pieces more uniformly, set piece "on" the garnish rather than down "in" the garnish. Place pieces a bit more carefully. This box could become a 9 very easily.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook
10/27/2013 11:13:36 pm

I would score this box a 9.

Suggestion: The color could be a little darker on the chicken.

joe
10/28/2013 12:57:56 am

8 - most of the coloring is from the sauce, would like to see the chicken a little darker.

Steve R - KCBS CBJ
10/28/2013 01:37:41 am

I gave this box a score of 9. I like the appearance of the meat very much, a nice uniform amount of sauce on each piece. I do think there's too much garnish in the box, but that did not influence my judging of the chicken.

DJ Martin
10/28/2013 02:05:42 am

score/reasons = 8
Just a bit light in color but not over sauced.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ
10/28/2013 04:37:34 am

8 - Pieces appear near equal in size, but not evenly trimmed. A very good looking chicken box.

Moonpie
10/28/2013 05:07:10 am

9 Good Color and looks moist.

Comments... If a judge scored it 8 I would not be too surprised. The unevenness of the pieces and what looks to be dry bone sticking out in person would certainly get the lower score.

Deb
10/29/2013 01:21:31 am

Score/Reasons: 9; Nice color, well balanced presentation; good symmetry.
Suggestions/Comments: Keep doing what you're doing- this is a great looking box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
