BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - too much sauce and is there a reason that the top row only has 2? The rows should be equal IMO.

9 no improvement needed!

9 - Chicken looks good, uniformed, and juicey

7-sause too heavy can't see meat

8 too saucy & unbalanced, could use one more to even the rows

8 - Maybe limit the box to 6 pcs by replacing the lower right, removing the top left, and use the other top thigh. Too much sauce.

9! Well presented box. Even spacing, sizing and color. Look moist. having the extra two pieces shows creativity from the standard six arrangement.

8 maybe 7

Score = 6.

Way too much sauce! You can't see the chicken and you have to wonder if the sauce is hiding something. Not appetizing at all.

Score/Reasons = 7, sauce is too heavy and dark to see any meat.

Suggestions/Comments = Neaten up the garnish for your best appearance.

I would score this box a 7 because it is hard to see the meat with the heavy sauce.
Suggestion: Be sure to wipe down the inside of the box before turn in.

Larry MCBJ

7 - over sauced with bare spots, box not balanced.

Jim Perry
2/18/2014 02:08:41 pm

Score/Reasons = 8. Maybe just a bit heavy on the sauce. Top pieces are different sizes.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Nice shape and size. Good color, but appears to have a pinch too much sauce/glaze.

Christopher James
2/18/2014 10:49:44 pm

Score = 7 Far too much sauce; haphazardly placed chicken in box. The garnish used did not enhance the product.

Suggestion: Tone down the sauce amount, and let the chicken naturally shine through. Over-sauced product is a sure fire indicator of something amiss in the cooking of the product.

I can't see the chicken for the sauce

Mike CBJ KCBS, GBA
2/18/2014 11:36:47 pm

7- Too much sauce! Pieces look uniform in size except the piece on the bottom right; it appears smaller then the others and takes away from the appearance because of the difference in the left and right sides of the bottom row.

Based on the photo, I would give this a 7. The color is very dark, and seems to have way to much sauce. It looks like it was just poured over, not brushed on.

Score 8
The peices are too heavily sauced. The peices are nice & even.

Score/Reasons = 8, definitely looks oversauced.

Suggestions/Comments = would probably look better if pieces were turned sideways. Garnish should frame the meat. 3-3-2 arrangement just looks strange. (not scoring points, but detracting just the same)

Ed KCBS/MCBJ
2/19/2014 12:28:46 am

Um...sizes are off, symmetry is lost. So oversauced that all I'm gonna taste is sauce..and it's not really applied all that well.
What we have here is just and average chicken entry, 6.

Score/Reasons = 7, way too much sauce. When I see so much sauce I wonder what the cook is trying to hide. Taste, toughness, or over done meat.

Suggestions/Comments = Use a whole lot less sauce and let the meat shine

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

7 - The sauce is so thick I think I see finger dimples - gives me the impression I won't be tasting chicken.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, To much sauce.

Comments: It is a meat competition, not a sauce competition.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 8. Too much sauce.

Suggestions/Comments: Suggest you stick with 6 pieces and try not to overcrowd the box.

Shawn Higgins

Score = 6

I really want to like this presentation but the sauce completely kills it for me. It's really thick and hides pretty much everything! All I can say is that the pieces look uniform and sauce is consistently applied but over sauced. I would want to taste the pieces with this presentation I'm afraid that either something is trying to be covered up or it's just a bad decision. Too bad...let the meat be the star!

GeorgeB

Score/Reasons=7, sauce is dark and appears to be a heavy, think, application. Placement of the pieces make the box look unbalanced.

Suggestions=tidy up the garnish and adjust placement of piece for a more uniform look.

7 - nice arrangement, even sizes. The color is not very appealing, too dark, looks like chocolate in the photo.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK

7.....Way over sauced. With the cover up the meat can't be judged.

Haphazard garnish. Clean the sauce off the box. To crowded. Try six pieces.

David - CMBJ/KCBS

score - 8 - very nice arrangement but overall color is very dark

Bob CBJ/KCBS
2/19/2014 11:28:48 am

Score: 7 Pieces 1 and 8 not as uniform as the other. Unable to see meat due to over saucing.

Suggestion: Less sauce, the meat is the focus.

Score/Reasons: 8; Pluses: At least 6 pieces in box; Nicely trimmed. Minuses: Piece vary greatly is size...front row 2 right pieces quite small compared to all of 2nd row and right piece in 3rd row. Sauce is incredibly thick, gloppy, unevenly applied on most pieces (the bone end has little-->no sauce.

Subbestions/Comments: Fix the minuses above.

Score 7. I have to wonder how this cook would want judges to score this chicken when we are unable to even see the chicken. Once again "cooks judges are to judge the meat, Not the sauce".

Steve Rounds
2/20/2014 11:47:59 pm

First impression is burnt, cause of the black. It probably is not, but first impressions are what counts. The first impression I've used all the way through to Master judge is "How appetizing does the meat look in the setting presented". Dark chicken just doesn't look appetizing. Nice uniformity on sizes. Appearance (6) average

Steve R - KCBS and BBQ Brethren CBJ
2/23/2014 12:38:02 pm

A nice looking entry, but WAY too much sauce. You bite into this one and get a face full of sauce ! Scored an 8.
(Was going to score it a 7, but the overall appearance pushed it up)

Eric KCBS MCBJ
2/24/2014 12:31:33 pm

Score/Reasons = 8; whoa! Lay off the sauce! Size looks a little inconsistent and arrangement looks nice. We judge meat, not sauce and I bet I wouldn't be able to taste the meat with that much sauce on it. We have to judge as submitted, so I couldn't wipe any sauce off before tasting. Go for a glaze, not a thick coating, that enhances flavor. Too much sauce screams you are hiding something.

Suggestions/Comments = While we don't judge garnish or quantity (unless it's illegal), make the garnish uniform around the samples. Like to see the TC and other volunteers get a taste as well.

Matt KCBS CBJ
2/25/2014 02:18:01 am

Score/Reasons = 6, mostly uniform shapes, but it is hard to see the chicken under all that sauce. Because of the sauce, it just looks average to me.

Suggestions/Comments = Thin that sauce out and use the garnish to make sure the chicken isn't buried in the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
