BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - they have a nice color except one and it's that reason that I gave it an 8. It's nice that you thought about the T/C.

Ernie CBJ/KCBS

8 - The one piece on the right looks like it is out of place. Other than that, it would have been a 9

8-loose the seventh piece would look better

9 nice color

Thanks for thinking of TC

8 - The piece on the bottom blocks the other 2. Replace the lower right piece with the "extra" and I would give it a 9. Thanks for thinking of the Table Captain though!

8. Good original layout. Even color and they look moist. However, the lower right piece is smaller. I like the fact that the bottom piece which is triangular rather than rectangular was placed there as it enhanced the feeling that there was a plan behind the layout.

Score = 8.

This box would have been a 9 if they would have taken out the lower right piece and replaced it with the one in front.

Score/Reasons = 6, A bit too splotchy saucing and coloring.

Suggestions/Comments = No need for that 7th piece. Work on a neater presentation.

I would score this box a 7. Color is light, pieces not uniform, not placed in the box neatly.
Suggestion: practice on chicken trimming.

8 - Great color. Samples could use a little more trimming. Very good presentation.

Score = 9 Great looking box. Chicken appears moist and nicely cooked w/o a ton of sauce masking the natural product and the cook's skills. and. I love that the cook left the chicken naturally shaped!

Very good presentation

8- Nice color and not too much sauce; Looks good

The bottom right piece and the center piece could be switched. The bottom right piece looks lighter than all the other pieces.

I have to give this one a 7. The last piece looks like it was just thrown in. Sizes vary too much, colors not even. Would like to have seen this trimmed up, and a little more thought to putting the box together. But it may just taste great?

Score 8
The pieces aren't even. Not too much sauce on them. A nice presentation

The only thing stopping me from the 9 is the 2 clunkers you threw in to the mix with the nice sized thighs.
Thanks for the nice non-glompy finish, it appears yummy,
Here's your 8

Score/Reasons = 8, uneven sizes, coloration and saucing, but still looks pretty good

Suggestions/Comments = trim up the pieces a wee bit and only put 6 pieces in the box as it looks too jumbled with 7.

Score/Reasons = 9, Not perfect. The lower right hand thigh is not sauced evenly. I do like the amount of sauce used here. The lower right thigh's skin looks as if it would be difficult to bite through.

Suggestions/Comments = Just make sure the sauce is applied evenly, I do like the amount of sauce applied, this allows the meat to show through. Just make sure the meat have a good bite through.

9 - I like it - looks perfectly cooked, perfectly sauced and about as uniform as you can get thighs without tampering too much.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
2/19/2014 02:46:38 am

Score - 8, The color is a little uneven, other than that this is a nice looking chicken box.

Comments: This box shows you don't have to have chicken that is all the same size and shape to look good.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 6. Just doesn't look appetizing.

Shawn Higgins

Score = 7

Good clean and crisp presentation. The color is a tad light, for my liking but the pieces appear to be a little under sauced, but are consistent in size and shape.

GeorgeB

Score/Reasons=8, like the appearance of the meat and the fact that it looks like thighs. The piece in the right front corner is a lighter color than the rest and seems out of place. It is also smaller than the others and oddly shaped.

Suggestions=try to select pieces of similar size and shape.

8...Nice skin color with a good glaze. Not over sauced. Uneven sizes.

The front piece makes the box look too full.

8 - nice presentation, even sizes, good display. color is a little pale, might be the photo, it appears yellow in areas.

David - CMBJ/KCBS
2/19/2014 07:56:19 am

score - 7. You have 2 pieces of chicken that are totally different size and shape than the others and adding them makes the box look very uneven

Bob CBJ/KCBS
2/19/2014 11:11:50 am

Score: 7 Skin looks dry. Uneven pieces.

Suggestion: More attention to meat and skin trimming.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 7; Pluses: At least 6 pieces in box; Generally a nice color on meat. Minuses: Trimming appears non-existent at worst, inconsistent at best; Irregular piece sizes...smallest at lower right among all the much larger pieces. Sauce has irregular appearance, in addition to being thick & gloppy. Box appears over full because the large pieces should have been trimmed down to the size of the smallest piece.

Suggestions/comments: When you get pieces of chicken of differing sizes, trim the larger pieces down to the size of the smallest piece. This makes for easier cooking, a better appearance in the box. Even number of pieces in a box generally make for a better appearance. Make sure the finished color is as even looking as possible.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
2/20/2014 08:53:40 am

Score 8. Reasons: This is a fairly nice presentation of chicken, but due to pieces not being uniform is size and color I deducted I point. I would also suggest that the box be prepared using the same garnish. Judges are taught to ignore the garnish unless it is illegal, but the mixed garnish is distracting.

Steve Rounds
2/20/2014 11:58:53 pm

A little bit messy presentation. Don't try to jam more in the box than looks good. Square up thighs a little more.Appearance (6) average

Steve R - KCBS and BBQ Brethren CBJ

Not too much uniformity here, but the chicken does look appetizing --- 8

Eric KCBS MCBJ
2/24/2014 12:10:22 pm

Score/Reasons = 7; not uniform in size, coloration, or seasoning; looks dry; skin looks unnatural; overall unappetizing

Suggestions/Comments = While it looks like some care was taken with arrangement (and it's always nice to see seven samples) the greenery could be more even around the samples (yes, we don't consciously score greenery or number of samples unless it's a DQ).

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
