Nice box, good color. But skin shrinkage, especially on the top 2 right side.

They just look average to me. Dark wet thick sauce, can't see the chicken underneath. Brush strokes are clearly visible. Not sure if it's the picture to blame or not for these nicely placed drummies not tempting me to grab one.

I'd give it a 7. Well balanced presentation, but I believe that better looking pieces of meat should have been turned in.

Score 7 The legs, especially the skin, looks dry and overcooked. Not a real appetizing looking box.

To me this box is below the average box presented here or in real comps. Not at all appetizing.

On a positive note, the meat placement in the box is symmetrical, the legs are all about the same size.

For improvement, find legs whose skin covers the meat and cook it so it stays there. I can't tell if the skin is very wrinkled or there is just to much uneven sauce, smooth it out on all pieces more like the front left piece. I would try to lighten up the color.
I have never done legs in comp but I would imagine they present their own challenges.

GBA and KCBS. I'd love for these critics cook the same drumsticks (and I'll judge them). Skin can be removed w/o a penalty..KCBS rules. You can de-bone the legs and give pulled chicken leg meat if you want. Brush strokes!!! You are unbelievable and have never cooked in competition. Damn, it's about the taste and presentation. It's a good looking box

7 - Great to see something other than thighs. Placement is great. Overall coloring is not so good, but I still wouldn't mind trying a piece.

7 Skin shrunk on some pieces. I'd like a bite. Our team took first place with a box of legs and thighs. Legs are a challenge, getting the skin to cooperate.

I like the change of pace with the legs. They look tasty.

7 - Nice color and layout, but the shriveled looking skin makes it look overcooked and less appetizing.

I give them a 6 the skin is pulling back on all the pieces and sauce is applied over the meat to hide the pull back. They seem to be overly dark and sauce isn't even.

I give them a 6

Wow at the skin pull-back. I guess to some it's less appetizing as a result, but not to me, it looks like chicken for goodness sake! Generally nice looking, but rather dark.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
