cbj/comp cook, 8 possibly a 9 in person, to me it looks like they need to cook a little longer, it's prolly the lighting on this pic.other than that everything looks excellent, nice job of trimming and keeping all the pieces the same size.

the sauce looks good with no blotching, size is as close to perfect as it gets. I do like how the garnish not overwhelming the box.

8. Might be 9 in person. Bottom left chix is crooked. Slightly different size pieces. Love the color.

Good looking box. Thank you for remembering all the helpers and putting more than 6 pieces in there. A full box just looks better

Nice uniform size and glaze of sauce on all the thighs, but the two pieces on the lower left look like they are darker than the rest. A solid 8

Very nice presentation. I took it down one point due to the left row, especially the bottom and center piece in that row. If they had been placed parallel to the others and a bit lighter it would have been a 9. I would even go 8.5 if possible

9 - Nice presentation. Borderline too much sauce.

Very clean box, nicely done and would have no problem scoring a 9 on appearance.Only suggestion would maybe be to square garnish off evenly all the way around the box if you notice the garnish in the front of box is uneven with the rest of it but it's a very minor detail.

8-9. Not real fond of chicken that doesn't look like chicken, but these are nicely uniform and look to be decent size.

Score: 8 - Excellent trimming, sauce looks good, well arranged in the box, color is a bit lite, and the box is crowded or I would have scored a 9.

On first gander this looks pretty good, but not excellent. The more I study it the more I'm tending to give this box a 7 intead of 8. I'm not quite sure what part of the chicken this is (I'm assuming thighs, but I've never seen a thigh come off a chicken looking like this!). Color is too orange for me - looks un-natural. Color isn't uniform and the sauce could be spread more evenly.

Score: 9

Perfect color and shine. If I had to take off for anything it could be for to much sauce but I would have to be in person to see if it was to much or not.

A reluctant 8. It looks like the cook did not dip the front pieces all the way. Mistakes on parsley. Too crowded. Nice job with the trim.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
