9 Excellent, generous quantity, pulled and slices, looks moist.

Score 8. Some of the slices on the left side and especially the back one on each side appear dark and overcooked. This make me wonder if the others are also overcooked and the sauce is covering the error.

Pulled pork looks moist. Slices over sauced. Nice bark.....8

7, maybe an 8 in person. The bark on the MM slices on the left plus the back 2 slices on the right is VERY dark, while the 3 forward slice on the right is much lighter. I find that off-putting. Add to that the jumbled pile of pulled in the middle...which looks like it was hurriedly dumped in. Was turn-in deadline approaching?

A 6. Bark color not uniform, two back slices appear to have no glaze, others only partially glazed and front second left slice almost hidden.

Looks interesting, but not "I can't wait". I like the pulled with slices, but appears over-sauced.

8. Pulled looks tasty but sliced on left is not arranged evenly

Score: 6

Not a fan. When I look at the box my eyes focus on 2 things: 1) The big pile in the middle above the slices. 2) The 2 bottom slices on the left. Those 2 slices are more burnt around the edges and do not match the others that are in the box. Also the slices appear to have to much sauce on them and when butted up under the pulled pork that is pale in color it brings out the saucey look more.

Comment: I like the layout but IMO dont build the pulled to much higher than the slices. Be sure slices look alike and have them turned all the same way. Do better job with sauce such as brushing it in better.

9 - Good looking box. Some pulled plus plenty of slices for the judges to choose from. There will even be some left over for the Table Captain!
KCBS CBJ, CTC; only the test away from Master.

7 - Uneven sauce, pulled covers slices and looks like a last second addition. Slces are spaced unevenly.

The sauce is uneven on the slices. I'd give this box an 8.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

I like the slices, they could be arranged a little better.
The shreded pork is nothing but distracting for the overall box look.
7 remove pulled stuff and line the slices up better 9.

6 - 7 The medallions are not well-placed in the box and have too much sauce on them. The pulled meat could be better placed but looks like it was thrown in the box. Not appetizing!

Sharon KCBS CBJ

8 would be a 9 without the uneven sauce

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
