Score = 8

I like the presentation it looks great with ample amount of pulled pork. I wish there were some pieces other than pulled pork, it's tough to see if there is chopped based on the picture. The color of the bark looks good and the meat looks fairly moist.

7 Kind of a mess and I can't see it very well. You know, this might be very good but difficult to know.

score - 8 - appear dry or overcooked. Very random arrangement with burnt ends or the darker meat scattered a bit.

a 6. Lots of pulled pork but it looks like a jumble of chunks and stringy meat. Also looks dry.

6 looks dry and overcooked

Picture is blurred which makes it hard to see. It appears this box contains only pulled pork. It is not particularly attractive. I definitely want to see slices. It may taste great, but on first view, I would give it a 5.

7 - possibly an 8 in person. `Bad pic makes this box look dry and mushy.

Score/Reasons; 7 - meat looks dried out an unappealing.

Suggestions/Comments: Apply a finishing spritz just before closing box lid. Photo appears a bit fuzzy.

9 - bit of benefit of the doubt, as pic is fuzzy, but pulled/chunks give impression of moisture and although a bit random placement gives an overall uniform appearance.

Don

6 - not appetizing at all, looks like a random pile of dry pulled pork. I do like that some outer crust is provided on some of the pieces of pulled pork.

Score 8. Fuzzy photo makes it impossible to see detail but this looks good. Beautiful bark.

8 - Looks dry

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 9. Reason: This box of pork has a wonderful and even mix of color. Most of the meat appears moist without having a coating of sauce. Suggestion: I realize that the meat in the box could have been shaken up on handling, but neater placement of the outer pieces and the removal of the 3 0"clock white piece would help keep this box a nine. If the color is off due to the picture please ignore this part of the suggestion.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons: 7 Its a pretty bad pic but the meat looks really dry and the meat has no real presentation to it.

Suggestions/Comments: You might want to consider being more careful with picking out the meat to put in the box. I applaud the nice bark pieces but your box looks a bit haphazard and boring.

Russ Hazzon
6/28/2013 01:19:22

Score/Reasons = 6, meat looks dry, not arranged well in box

Suggestions/Comments = Meat should show some moisture, possibly dipping meat in its' own gravy, but shredded (small) pieces tend to dry out very quickly. Try presenting meat in various ways - money muscle, pulled, chunks w/bark, etc.

6/28/2013 01:21:07

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 7. Meat looks moist. May score higher if the picture was a little more clear.
Suggestion: Try to put more than one kind of cut in the box

6....Good bark but the Meat looks dry. Box looks unarranged.

Add some moisture to the meat either with sauce or broth.

Scored a 9 - this is the way I like pulled pork. Nice appearance to the entry. A little bit of garnish on the 4 corners was a nice touch also.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
6/28/2013 04:59:33

Score/Reasons: 8; The meat appears slightly dry. It could very well be a 9 in person, but have to judge from what is displayed.

Suggestions/Comments: Could be just an "off" photo, but maybe just a spritz of moisture would be in order here. The box has a very nice mixture of bark and pulled pork.

Greg KCBS CBJ

8- Some shred, some chunks, a little bark, I like it. Slight dry appearance. Very good presentation.

Score/Reasons = 6, There is nothing I like more than a big ol' heaping pile of pork. And that is what it looks like, a big ol' heaping pile of pork. On a competition level, the presentation is just not there.

Score = 9, Photo is a little blurry, so hard to see detail on the meat. Looks like it might be a little dry, but I am giving benefit of the doubt. If it is dry I would drop score to an 8.

Matt P.

7 - the pieces are irregular and look to be thrown in the box. The bark chunks look very tasty, but the pulled doesn't look particularly moist (though the blurry photo makes that hard to discern).

Suggestion: put the bark chunks and pulled in separate piles next time.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
6/29/2013 01:56:56

Big 'ol box of pretty dry looking pork. Do I have to move the chunks out of the way to get some pulled?
Doesn't look like much effort on your behalf, average 6.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks a bit jumbled, and potentially a bit dry.

Suggestions/Comments = try organizing the box so that chunks with bark aren't just mixed in but are around the outside or something. Lightly spritz or LIGHTLY sauce so that there is a sheen and looks moist.

Score/Reasons = 7, the meat looks dry. There are different colored meats mixed together.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest adding very little sauce to the meat and mixing the sauce into the meat. Try not including the burnt portions of the meat. but if you do chose to, separate it from the rest of the meat.

Matt KCBS CBJ
7/1/2013 01:56:22

Score/Reasons = 7 - above average, bark looks good, although meat appears to be on the dry side.

Suggestions/Comments = It's hard to tell with the blurry picture... but presentation seems a bit hurried and sloppy. In my opinion only, there should be a little bit of green on all sides to "frame" the pork.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
7/1/2013 02:04:45

Score/Reasons = 7, possibly higher in person. Picture is too out of focus to properly score.
Suggestions/Comments = Work on the presentation/arrangement. Looks a bit haphazard.

Dan CBJ/KCBS
7/2/2013 07:41:52

This possibly suffers from a poor photo. The meat seems to have a very matte finish suggesting that it might be dry. There are some appealing chunks of bark but overall it looks like a nice presentation which sat around for a while.

Score/Reasons = 9, excellent. Pork looks delicious - beautiful color and texture.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
