7 - The presentation needs a little work. The chunks look very appetizing, but the rest looks barely above average. Some of it just looks like it was thrown in there last minute. Stick with one type of garnish next time.

9 Very appealing to the eye and I believe that the cook(s) took some time to make sure thier entire butt(s) was featured. Nice work!

This could have shown up at the table with the top pieces the way they are, and the bottom pieces the way they are, but for a box to score 9 things need to be rotated/positioned uniformly or look like it was on purpose. This looks like it was shook up a little, and I can only assume it wasn't because the cook took the picture.

The cooking looks excellent, and I'm pretty sure it's gonna score high in the categories that really matter.

7- looks dry. the pieces look like they are sitting down inside a bowl. could raise it up on the greens to give it a little more pop.

9 looks well planned, all the presented meat looks juicy. Not heavily sauced. Personally I would have rotated the money muscle pieces so the bark showed better. It all looks pretty tasty.

seven but think maybe better in person--could use some more product in the front

Two low scores in a row... what is up with me tonight?? is it me or the color is just off and I see sauce on everything.
I prefer the burnt ends on the left... the slices should show me the bark color rather than the sauced sides. lots of sauce on the pulled.

This one gets a 9.

All three presentations of pork look like something I want to dig into, it's nicely laid out.

was back and forth with 7; always give benefit of doubt to the cook. Nice bark and color. Sparse display and it isn't as appetizing as a result. As a judge I'm expecting the meat to be cold.

8 Wish picture was not taken in shadow.
Money muscle might be overdone but really hard to tell. Looking forward to the scores and comments from other judges.

I can't say why not a 9. It just doesn't seem to jump out at me.

Remember, 6 pcs is minimum. Nothing says you can't put more in the box. More meat can make the box look better.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
