BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score/Reasons = 8, very nice exterior of the meat. I cant see the interior of the meat.

Suggestions/Comments = keep cuts uniform. tilt meat to better display interior.

Score/Reasons = 9, might be a wee bit dry, but looks excellent to me.

Suggestions/Comments = would look better if all the bones were equal showing (but NOT a scoring factor!).

Arrangement, color, sauce all look very appetizing. Like that ribs are not over sauced.

Score = 9, Wow, this is an awesome looking box of ribs. This should be the definition of an excellent box of ribs. I would be looking forward to tasting these ribs!

Comments: There is not much to nit pick with this box. Some may say the ribs look a little dry, but I think that is just the photo. Also the cuts aren't perfectly straight, but they are almost as good as you could possibly get.

9
very nice presentation.
looks very inviting and as a judge can't wait to taste them.
I know we aren't supposed to take this into account, but I always like to see more than the mandatory 6 samples.

score-8, meat looks moist, its something looks good to eat, nice looking ribs

comments not affecting score:
-10 ribs total, good idea incase one sticks another, all judges will get one.
- I like to see the meat to take it all in, so presentation show casing the meat always helps,

8. Box is a bit overcrowded, can't see the edges. From a first look bones on ends look irregular.

Strong 8, even a 9. Pull back on some without being dark makes me think tender/moist. Color is great. Could be picky about not being consistent on pull back, but they make me want to eat 'em!

Score/Reasons = 9. That is a well balanced presentation with wonderful color, perfect amount of sauce and is very appealing to me. I'm seeing a slight glare in the photo and bet they look even better in person.

Comments - Not a consideration for scoring, but that is one full box! Too bad I can't sample one.

score 8: I'd have gone with 8 ribs instead of 10 to improve the eye appeal because two of them are so much smaller.

9 great looking box. A little more continuity on the bone vs meat is all I have to say. Thumbs up friend.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
