Wish they hadn't sauced the sides facing up. 8

8 - too much sauce covering the meat. I would like to see the cut sides without sauce.

9. Very nice box of ribs. Sure wish they were on my plate instead of in this photo!

I give the box an 8.

Nice looking ribs with a nice glaze. The 2 top ribs in the row seem to be a little larger and off cut a bit. If it's not just as good or better your better off leaving it out of the box.

First glance was a toss-up between 8-9, but give it to the cooks. Looks moist and appetizing to me. Top rib in-line needs to be edged back a wee bit to present a neater appearance, but that is TOO picky!

cbj/comp cook, 9 looks real good.

9 - Not a fan of the cut side of the meat being sauced, but this is an outstanding box. Looks very appetizing.

Rob - KUDOS on not allowing your personal bias (i.e., not a fan of the cut side of the meat being sauced) to influence your score. You still found the ribs to be appetizing and scored the box fairly. Nice job!

8, too much sauce and the sauce on the two ribs laying on their side does not look good.

Larry CBJ/KCBS/GBA

7 - Too much sauce and no pull-back on the bones. If I judged the chicken box with the same unique garnish in the corners, I'd notify the Table Captain about possible sculpting.

score 7 , sauce is overwhelming

Score 9. I would caution the cook to watch the amount of sauce. Any more than these ribs have and I would score these ribs an 8.

Nice looking ribs. The ribs on the bottom left are a little darker that those ont he upper right, but they transition well so it isn't that noticeable. The last rib at the upper right corner is larger than the rest and kind of sticks out. Overall a great box, definitely an 8 maybe a 9.

High 8, maybe a 9. A little too much sauce on the ribs for my taste. Other than that, 9.

Score: 9 - Excellent color, placement in the box, and especially nice slicing. Very delicious looking.

FROSTBUSTER BBQ JUDGES "Appearance" Scores:9,9,9,9,9,9

Most of the BBQ Critic judges complained of "too much sauce" and Frostbuster judges had absolutely no complaints on the amount of sauce used. That said, let's blame the quality of the photo. Frostbuster judges clearly liked the appearance with all 9's.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
