7 Lighting does no favors. Maybe a 8 or better with better lighting.

Mike Cannon

5 - pale and unappetizing

Bill F

7 Generous offering but color, moisture doesn't seem right. Slices on the thick side, maybe over done?

8 possible 9 in person, looks kinda dry in the picture, nice even slices and lot's of samples.I like this someone turning in a good portion of their brisket and not just the sweet spot, tells me they are confidant in their entire piece of meat.

7, possibly 8 in person. Color of brisket is too light and leads me to think it is tough. Meat also looks dry.

Score 8. Reason: It may be the picture, but this brisket looks pale and washed out. Actually it looks more like pork than beef. Suggestion: I would consider placing less slices in the box, it's nice to cover the T/C and others, but the more slices that are added to the box the more chances you take to add clutter and slices that are not uniform. It also does not allow you to use the garnish to "frame" the meat, as nicely.

I'd give it a 7. While the layout is well proportioned the color of the meat doesn't look that appetizing. I may score higher if I see it in person.

Score/Reason - 8. Appears nicely cooked with light hand on the sauce. Would like to see the bark developed more - looks a little washed out.

Suggestions/Comments - Out of focus;careful on the camera work. May be too much meat in this box.

8 - No bark on slices. Looks dry.

7 needs more color on the bark and the meat looks dry. photographer: consider using a diffuser on your flash. the white of the box is bouncing back the flash causing your pictures to wash out. even a handkerchief over the flash would help. at least that is what i would try first to prevent the washed out picture that i seem to see too often. feel free to delete the photog. suggestion from this comment before posting.

Score/Reasons = 7 looks more like pork than beef. looks dry.

Suggestions/Comments =spray apple juice to make meat look wetter. Maybe cook time is too long?

something ain't right but I don't know what it is

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reason: 9; Very well constructed box of great-looking brisket (even though the photo lighting is too harsh).

Suggestion: Box looks great. (I attribute the washed out coloration to the bad lighting in the photo.)

Here's where a full box of well cut and presented brisket just does'nt cut it. These slices look anemic and dry.
All I got for ya is an above average 7.

Sugg.
Try and get some color in there somwhere, either in the bark or maybe a dip in a finishing sauce before it hits the box.

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 7. The meat is lighter in color and may have a dry look to it. It may be different in person.

Suggestion: If you could apply some juice to shine up the meat it would be more appealing.

Score = 8, Brisket looks a little dry from the photo.

8 - Looks as though it might be a mite tough. This one could use a little saucing to bring out grain of meat.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

Score: 8 Nice looking box and the meat looks juicy but the color is really really light and its a bit un-appealing. Hopefully its just the pic. Overall a nice box though.

SCORE/REASONS: 7. Meat appears dry.

SUGGESTIONS: Perhaps reduce the number of slices in the box to showcase the meat submitted.

Score / Reasons = 9, the meat looks good and the rub on the top gives it a look of being tasty.

Suggestion / Comments - I like the rub on the meat. I would like to taste the meat

7... The color of the bark is very light. Meat looks dry. 11 slices means it's probably sliced thin. Looks like foil on the third slice and a couple of other places.

Suggestions-Darken up the bark. Put fewer slices in the box. Spray with moisture before closing the lid. Check for foil or other off color object that draws attention.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
