Score 9
The box is neatly presented. The slices are moist looking & shiny. The burnt ends on the top are a plus

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ
12/17/2013 12:23:22 am

Score/Reasons = 9 good color and uniformity with the slices - just looks like a good box that will taste good.

8 good looking box cuts are a bit off

Mike Cannon

9.....Like the color and bark. Moist meat. Great looking Burnt Ends.

Borderline over sauced. Align the slices better. The back three slices are leaning to the right.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8. Nice slices and chunks but meat looks over-sauced.

Lorne Rae
12/17/2013 01:28:32 am

8. Good layout, nice color, even sizing, look moist. However, slices are not aligned - some extend to the right and some to the left.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
12/17/2013 01:35:55 am

Score 8. This entry appears to be some nice brisket, but I do not care for the glaze that the meat is cover with. For this reason I deducted one point.

David - CMBJ/KCBS
12/17/2013 01:48:14 am

Score - 9 great looking box

Comments. The sauce appears a but heavy but I cannot tell if it is the camera/flash or not. If looks lke this in person might go 8. Decided to give the benefit of the doubt here

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
12/17/2013 02:19:24 am

Score = 7, Sauce is uneven, color is uneven. Too much sauce on the slices at the top of the box.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
12/17/2013 03:24:16 am

Score/Reasons = 9. Good looking slices with a light saucing. Burnt ends look tasty.

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges will mark down for the brush strokes, careful with those. I would even up and close the spacing on the arrangement to appear less crowded - again, some judges will mark down for spacing that is off, etc..

9 -- As pretty a box of brisket as I have seen.

Larry MCBJ
12/17/2013 04:04:13 am

7 - Brush strokes, spotty/uneven sauce. Second slice from the top has piece missing.

9- Slices look moist, as do the burnt ends. Great color. Excellent box.

Score/Reasons: 9 - very nice looking box. Nice glaze, looks very appetizing and inviting to dive in.

Suggestions/Comments: Slightly trim the ends of each slice of brisket to remove the ragged ends and make them equal in length.

9 looks perfect to me!

joe
12/17/2013 07:25:10 am

8 - Heavy brown colored sauce is my reason for not giving a 9. Some slices do not have sauce on the ends, appears two burnt ends are sauced the others not. 1st piece looks small compared to the rest.

Dan S
12/17/2013 07:48:20 am

score: 9

Moonpie
12/17/2013 08:54:48 am

My immediate reaction is 9 as I continue to look it might not score so high in person.

comments: the ends of some slices look dry where the sauce isn't... almost like that is where it was held to be put in AFTER saucing... try re-applying after all the meat is in box and if you did pay attention to the very ends.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

I would score this box a 9! Looks wonderful!
Suggestion: none. I would be more than happy to turn in this box any day.

Very good looking box only thing that you might want to change is even glazing the first three pieces look a little light on glaze.I would go 8.5 depending on taste of course.

I give it an 7. An attractive box, but too much sauce on the slices..

Steve R - KCBS & BBQ Brethren CBJ

This is the definition of a 9 ! Nice and full box, neatly arrainged, meat looks delicious and not too much sauce. Even an extra piece for the TC. Nice job

9-looks excellent
maybe more sauce on chunks
glaze looks like it may have some grit

Score/Reasons = 9, the box looks good. I like the color

Suggestions/Comments = The only suggestion would be take a little more care in spacing the slices and maybe just a little less sauce / glaze

JohnnyY/NCPC,NCBS,CBJ,KCBS

8 - box looks looks nice but more attention should be given to detail. Sauce is not evenly applied, slices are not uniform and symmetrical, and sauce is on the inside edges of box.

DJ Martin
12/19/2013 10:34:40 pm

Score/Reasons = 7 Samples are neatly arranged. I like to see slices and cubes. Hard to tell what the meat looks like under all that gravy though.

Matt KCBS CBJ
12/20/2013 02:37:02 am

Score/Reasons = 8, maybe a 9 in person, meat looks nice, but a bit hard to tell because of all the sauce. Burnt ends look great - this box is making me hungry!

Suggestions/Comments = What, no burnt end for the TC? Ha! Just kidding, the box looks great. I would just make sure the brisket slices line up evenly. The last 3 are a bit longer than the front 4 pieces, but that is nit-picking.

Seaton Hall - KCBS
12/20/2013 05:52:54 am

8. Spacing of slices is not uniform. The front slice looks like someone has already nibbled on it.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS; CMJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
12/23/2013 02:30:29 am

Score/Reasons = 8, oversauced! not evenly sauced, reduced the appetizing factor.

Suggestions/Comments = placement that shows the same amount of garnish all around the outside of the box would look better (but not judged!).

9 Full box and meat looks moist with good color.

9 outstanding presentation

Michael KCBS MCBJ CTC
12/24/2013 03:42:03 am

8-9 looks very good, make the parsley even all around the meat. put sauce on the bare spots 4th slice on both ends and 5-7 on the left sides.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
12/25/2013 06:48:53 am

score/reason 8 good color, borderline thick sauce, looks moist burnt ends could be more uniform in size and placed straighter

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
12/26/2013 10:37:03 pm

Score: 8 A bit oversauced

Comment: Beautiful box just a bit too much sauce on the top slices. Also, try to be careful about brush marks.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
