BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - did not like it at all. too saucy - did not like the separation.

Lorne Rae

7. Good color, look moist, and nice layout. However, thick sauce hides knife skills and top right cube is too far right and not lined up with others which upsets balance of display in box.

Score = 5

Very poor presentation. Enough said!

I would rate this a 7. Uneven cooking and too wet.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

First thought was meatloaf and a piece of beef jerky.
Nice cuts, great uniformity, no passion. Just some meat.
If your gonna sauce do it completley, not some here and some there.
I see a average 6.

8 to much sauce

RandyE

I give this one a high 8. May have scored higher if it had been fanned out some to see the meat.

Score/Reasons: 7 - From what I can see of the meat, it appears dry. Plus, it appears waaaaaayyyyyy oversauced. Maybe it's the photo...or my laptop that I'm using for this exercise, but I actually can't tell how many (I guess they're) slices are in the box.

Suggestions/Comments - use sauce as a glaze rather than slathered on as a mortar seemingly holding the pieces together.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ, CTC

7- Pic at an odd angle. Can't see the anything but the edge of the meat. Would appear better if laid a little flatter to show the side. Appears to have a sauce applied to the back half and the B.E.'s.

Erle Smith, KCBS CBJ & CTC
8/20/2014 06:40:00 am

6 - Fair entry. The slices are arranged so that it is difficult to see the cut clearly. It appears as though you may be trying to highlight the bark. But it raises a question if you were trying to hide the interior. The burnt ends are a little dark, but still a good color. Overall there is too much sauce, less would enhance the look. Also appears like there is more sauce on the slices nearer the box fold.. Showing the interior of the slices and lighter more consistent saucing would raise this score by more than a point.

Larry MCBJ
8/20/2014 08:01:40 am

6 - Can't see the meat and what I do appears over sauced.

Vern - MCBJ KCBS
8/20/2014 08:43:26 am

8 - Slices should be laid out a little instead of all stuck together.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
8/20/2014 09:08:03 am

Score/Reasons = 6. Tough to judge as all I see is sauce. I can't quite count the pieces but I can tell there are enough.

Suggestions/Comments =

Pete KCBS

Score - 7? This is a case where photography lets the entry down since it's shot from directly overhead. I assume there are six good samples in that box plus some burnt ends at the back? Hard to say what I'm looking at here.

GeorgeB

Score/Reasons = 6, Can't tell what that strip along the top is, guessing chunks but can't tell. Sauce is glompy and the slices are indistinguishable.
Suggestions/Comments = shingle the slices so the judge knows it is brisket and can see the meat. Even out the sauce. More meat in the box would help as well as separating the chunks(????) at the hinge end of the box.

Sorry, must be a 6.
At first glance, thought it was ribs. Cannot distinguish the individual slices. Definitely over sauced, especially for brisket. Try again so the slices can be seen individually.

Enrico BBQness, CBJ KCBS

I can't judge. I can watch only the top over sauced side w/o bark.

Score 9
The pieces look fairly evenly cut, and the burnt ends in the back look inviting. The entry looks very moist

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7, Too much sauce on the brisket. Can't see the front of the slices.

Score/Reasons = 5, not appetizing with all that sauce on it! I thought this was a meat contest!!! Can't even tell if there are 6 separate pieces in there!

Suggestions/Comments = wow

Achu
8/21/2014 01:53:43 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, meets the criteria for an entry and an attempt was made to include burnt ends, but there's no pizazz and I can't see the slices to judge the color and appearance of the important parts.

Suggestions/Comments = Lay down the slices. I want to see them. At least one or two visible slices to give me an idea of your skills. If I can't see them, you're hiding something.

6.....Way over sauced and blotchy. Slices not fanned so the Judges can see the meat. The Burnt Ends have good bark but over sauced.

Dip the slices in Au Jus mixture and don't sauce. Make bigger burnt ends.

5 - So much sauce I couldn't tell what was on the plate

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
8/25/2014 03:17:13 am

Score/Reasons = 8, Way too much sauce. Besides the amount of sauce applied, it was not applied evenly.

Suggestions/Comments = Use less sauce and ensure the sauce is applied evenly and over all the meat

6. Looks over sauced and over cooked.

Homer

7 I can't see all the meat, looks to me it's the top. Is the cooks hiding something or is he new?

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 6, Where's the Beef? By only showing the top surface you take away from the appearance.
Suggestions/Comments = Make use of all that room inside the box. Showcase your product.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
