7 The sauce looks uneven and the biggest piece being right next to the smallest doesn't look right.

Rob - KCBS CBJ/Comp Cook

7 - These pieces look really light, and sauce is a bit uneven. I usually don't care that much about the size differences in the pieces, but the box would look better if the pieces were a bit more closer in size.

7 Looks like they were in a hurry to make turn in

Dean (CBJ/Cook)

7 - needs attention to sizing, I want better color;sauce uneven; average appearance -no "visual pop"

I guess I am really partial to the even deeper red color

Would judge this box a 9...

8 although it looks good, it appears sloppy.

5 - Looks like it was baked in the oven and someone glopped sauce on it and called it BBQ. At least the box could have been cleaned. I really don't want any.

Easy to remove burnt specks (peppercorns?) would have helped, however I'm not crazy about the color a couple of areas look... well, I guess "deflated" is the only word that comes to mind.

Bill - Wish you would have given a reason for your 6. Inquiring minds would like to know. ;-)

7 - Pieces are different sizes and gives a shoddy appearance to the box. The sauce is sort of glopped on the two pieces in the back.

I would like to see more uniformity in the sizes

Doug KCBS/CBJ CTC
5/7/2012 02:46:53 am

The sauce and color are uneven. All the pieces are pretty much the same size except the middle piece in the bottom row. It looks out of place. I would give this box a 7.

David/KCBS certified judge

7 to 8, depending on looks in person. Garnish not uniform around border, sauce looks splotchy, pieces not uniform in size. Don't put the smallest piece next to the biggest piece! Also wipe the juice/sauce off the sides of the box.

BBQ Critic
5/7/2012 09:53:14 pm

David - "Garnish not uniform around border" comes across as judging garnish. I'm just say'n.... ;-)

6-- Very light, (hope there cooked to temp), pieces not even close in size, goobers, blotchy, sauce on garnish, gobs of sauce where the pieces touch.

Looks like chicken! Sizes are too dissimilar to be "very good". Sauce needs to be spread more evenly. Clean up the box before photographing!

BBQ Critic

Tom - Clean up the box before photographing? Since I took the photo, that;s like telling a Table Captain to clean up the box before judging it.

Uh, not gonna happen. ;-)

Score 8. The uneven size of the chicken distracts from this entry.

Score: 8
Definately looks good enough to eat, but there needs to be a bit more attention to detail- box appears rather sloppy.

inconsistant trim and splotchy sauce. Sauce on box.

6. Uneven sizes, uneven sauce, sauce spots on the sides of the box. Just average here.

I give the box a 6.

Entire box looks sloppy and messy. 1 pieces looks to be twice the size of the bottom center piece. Sauce is very uneven and blotchy and meat seems to be untrimmed.

Not much effort put into appearance for this box.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 8 - good color, nicely trimmed, placement is good. Some pieces are smaller and a little too much sauce for my taste. Overall, nice box.

Original Frostbuster Scores: 7,8,8,8,8,8

I'd say BBQ Critic & Frostbuster judges agree on this one. With the
exception of a few scores of six, pretty darn close. Most judges online and off have issues with "uniformity in size."

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
