9 - If i were looking for a picture to represent the ideal box, I would consider this one. I know some judge will probably nit pick the small drop of sauce on the front rim but that may have happened during turn-in or even when being carried by the table captain.

9 nice size

8 - Gloppy sauce and the lower left thigh has 2 "pimples." (?)

This box is a 9. The pieces look very appetizing in the box. Great color and not too much sauce. The peices are fairly even

Score/Reasons = 8, Looks really good, but sauce isn't evenly spread and looks gloppy.

Suggestions/Comments = garnish, while not judged, should frame the meat better to be more attractive.

9.....Nice color. Sauced about right.

Size the pieces a little better. Clean the sauce off the box.

8 - Nice full box, great color, looks tasty and tender, just a bit messy with the sauce on the box.

Score/Reasons = 8. Nice big thighs! Would have been a 9 but for the heavy saucing.

Suggestions/Comments = Add a little more garnish and clean the sauce off the box before turn-in. Judges generally don't mark down as sauce may have come from a jostled box at turn-in.

8 Nice color

neaten up the box(sauce posts) either no garnish or evenly placed garnish

Score/Reasons = 8, the thighs appear to be over sauced. Also, even though in some contests, the judges are not to consider the sauce on the box because this can happen when the boxes are distributed. In this case, the sauce was dripped onto the box at the meat was placed in the box or when is was sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = Put less sauce on the meat. Care should be taken when the meat is placed in the box and when it is sauced.

a 9. Good layout, even spacing, even color, look moist, even sized. yummy.

9 nice box w/large pieces

Spend a little more time on cleanup

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8 maybe 9 sauce looks a little thick, but not by much.

Comments. It looks like the box lid hit the thigh in the lower left corner. We should not take off for that because we don't know if it was done by the cook team, the volunteer or the table captain that handled it. That said there are couple of other small spots of sauce on the box. Just like chefs, take a moment to wipe down your box to make it look spotless. Attention to small details like this will help you score well.

Score it an 8.

Nice sized pieces but the sauce is uneven.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
10/27/2013 06:19:17 am

Score 8. If all of the thighs were the same as the center left I would have scored this entry a nine. The unevenness of the pieces and the sauce were the reasons I scored it an 8.

8 maybe 9 in person. good color equal size not to heavy on sauce. nice job

I give this box an 8, like the color, meat looks plump. Most of the pieces are the same size. Garnish could use a little work on the right side.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 8 - This is a box of very nice looking chicken. Nice looking pieces, no heavy gloppy sauce. Very appealing. Sauce on the left front piece appears markedly different looking from the other 5 pieces. Did the lid contact that piece and essentially "splat" the finish on the sauce. I can't see the lid, so I can't know. I would never deduct for sauce on the lid, but the marr that it leaves on the piece that it touches will probably affect appearance score.

Suggestions/Comments: With minor tweaks as discussed under "reason" above, this could be a 9 box.

I would score this box a 9.

Suggestion: Clean up around the inside of the box before turn in.

8 - too much sticky sauce. The color, shapes, and sizes are good.

Scored an 8 : nice presentation, pieces of meat look uniform in size and shape, but I notice a little bit too much sauce on the chicken (from what I can see in the photo)

This one invited my taste buds in for the party. Good color, not over sauced. Just nice looking plump chicken that I want to bite!

8 - Nice color, they look moist and are well arranged. Sauced about right, but the sauce is unevenly applied,OR it may be the photo angle. Good looking box!

9. Good Color. Moist.

Comment... the plumpness and size of the pieces attracts me and really encourages the judge to take a bite.

Score/Reasons: 9 Wish I had taste-o-vision!
Suggestions/Comments: Be cautious about the sauce- I didn't knock off points, but the amount of sauce is borderline heavy and some judges may dock you for it.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
