BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Nice looking box. Maybe a bit too dark but still a 9 on my score card

9 - That's a good box!!!

9 - Great looking box of chicken. Very good color, and don't appear to be too heavily sauced.

Score 8. Chicken is slightly too dark and the sauce too thick to get a nine.

Score = 7, possibly 8 in person

Not too sure about the color and the sauce looks a little heavy...even sized pieces.

8.....Sauce looks good. Nice color with a sheen. Meat looks undercooked. The ear on the top right piece is distracting.

Meat needs to be trimmed a little better.

8 - nice color - too much sauce

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9; Great looking chicken box.

Comments: Sauce looks a little uneven and a little to heavy. Most judges I have talked to at contest don't like heavily sauced meat.

score/reason 7 not uniform in size, color not appealing, sauce border glop's in some spots

9 - Nice box, good color and the pieces are fairly uniform in size. Good Job!!

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Pretty dark for my tastes....BUT I'm to judge as presented so, samples are even in size. They look cooked well and are sauced evenly but have puddles between pieces.
I'm not inclined to push somebody out the way for a piece so a very good 8 is my score.

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color, very appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = Try for more uniformity in size; some judges will score lower if the sixes and shapes are not uniform.

an 8. Good layout, even color and look moist. However, upper left one is noticeably smaller.

8 - Looks a little dark

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS,NCBBQA & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 8, looks pretty moist, but there are a couple problems - skin on LB thigh is not covering all like it is on all the others, some uneven saucing on RF and RC thigh, lacking something.

Suggestions/Comments = align the thighs all the same way to make the box look better (not a scoring point, but would help the overall appearance).

9 - Samples look moist and delicious. I like the deep dark red color , no doubt from the marinade, and the shiny glaze. great box.

Score/Reasons = 8; lacks uniformity in size; looks tasty

Suggestions/Comments = trim the bone that shows before cooking

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
5/13/2014 07:58:50 am

Score/Reasons = 7, Way too much sauce which makes the thighs shinny. Thighs should not be shinny.

Suggestions/Comments = Use less sauce and let the meat show through.

Another very good looking box. Pieces are fairly even with not too much sauce. Color is also good. Score 9

Matt KCBS CBJ
5/14/2014 03:27:57 am

Score/Reasons = 8, good color, but maybe on the smoker with the sauce a little too long, fairly uniform in shape and size

Suggestions/Comments = none

Bobby Whitefierld

Good color and glaze. Because of the unevenness of the pieces, they could have been arranged differently, so that it wasn't so obvious. Still, a nice box. An 8

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 9; Nicely done-a good, solid entry that I wish I could bite into right now. (BTW- Those are some huge thighs!)

Suggestions/Comments: Be careful of the amount of sauce- some judges might take issue with the level of "sauciness".

Bob CBJ/KCBS

Score 9 Nice color and uniform sizes.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
