9-Excellent, 8-Very Good, 7-Above Average, 6-Average, 5-Below Average, 4-Poor, 3-Bad,, 2-Inedible, 1-DISQUALIFIED (give reason)

Looks like no sauce. Chicken could be trimmed a lot better. Color is too light. This box just doesn't look very appetizing.

Looks a bit dull...matted...rather large, unevenly trimmed. Also skin looks a touch dried out.

Need More garnish...Finishing sauce is too dull...add honey to the sauce for more shine...I'll give it a 7

By FBA standard 7.5 is average so 7.5
Color is light, not enough seasoning's seen, trim the bones more so the skin covers and the ends aren't ragged.
All pieces should be symmetrical.
The garnish is light and needs to be much deeper to raise the chicken up into view better.

This cook worked hard to produce these toasty golden brown evenly cooked thighs. Could use additional sauce or glaze, garnish, and a fringe trim for some uniformity.

Could use some trimming for uniform size and skin looks like elephant hide. Garnish should enhance the product.

I am a cook with over 80 contests competed in and a CBJ.

That is a 9, it is neat and orderly. I am at a loss on the comments about trimming, this chicken is in its natural thigh shape and not artifically trimmed to look like a rectangle. That cannot be wrong.

This is why judges need to get out and cook with teams.

Why would anyone comment on the size of the chicken, that has nothing to do with anything.

That is not a 9. It is average at best. Bottom line this does not make me want to dive in the box to eat any of these pieces. They do not look dry or over sauced but they do look undercooked. As stated above the size of this entry is not an issue since they look normal whereas there are over trimmed pieces looked undersize and fake. That is not the case here. I give it a 6.

I agree with Scotty. That chicken in NOT a 9. Each piece of chicken in each box should be uniformed in size and color when you are submitting the box for judging! There is nothing worse than getting the runt because the box started on the other end of the table. You know it will not taste as good as the others.

I give it a 6... because it is average!

Winner submit mouth watering pieces of meat in appearance, texture, and taste!

Some of you need to go cook with a cook team so you get your expectations right.

A 6, just shows that some of you really do not know what you are talking about. The only way it deserves a 6 is if it was thrown in the box.

Some of you are the problem that we are seeing with inconsistent judging.

The appearance score should just be judge on how neat and orderly the box is, not on speculation that applies to taste and tenderness.

this is a smoked meat folks and that is what it looks like and I cant wait to taste the un adulterated taste on that skin!!
ANd if you get a runt so what better than a box of all runt trimmed MC chicken nuggets with 5 shots of clear coat!!

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
