I'm wavering between an 8 and a 9. If the sauce/glaze is actually as shiny as it appears in the picture it's an 8, if not then it's a 9.

8 for effort.

It is obvious that a lot of care went into this as well as practice.

for me, it looks more like candy than chicken, and for that reason doesn't really appeal to my palate

Tips: build your garnish bed up taller to lift the meat out of the box a little, work on trim a little and space oyur meat a little more evenly. I say these things not that I would judge off for them, just that other judges may, and some may not even know why they didn't give it a 9, it just didn't look like one.

Too shiny. I don't find the sauce coating appetizing - it looks like it's going to be difficult to hold in my hand and slippy in my mouth (that's what she said.)

Cut down on the shine - the meat looks like it's cooked perfectly, and the trimming/skinning is well done.

Calvin Klein has never seen thighs look so good.

You get a 9 from me. Yum!

I really like the glaze. It's the lack of symmetry in the trim and spacing between the pieces that looses you 1 pt.

Very Nice. 8

I think if you rotated them so that they look ready to pick up and eat would be better.

This chicken is so oversauced that I will only give this cook a score of 7!! The meat itself looks nicely prepared and presented, so why do cooks think they need to paint sauce on chicken. We are judging BBQ Meats NOT SAUCE and when you can not see the meat which is over coated with sauce I will score the box down on appearence every time.

7, maybe 8. First off, I do like that fact that this chicken looks like chicken. I'd score it higher if the top row of chicken was evenly spaced, my eye is drawn to the uneven spacing. Bottom row, left piece is oriented opposite of the other pieces (knuckle up instead of down). Not judging the garnish, but your box would be scored higher if your garnish improved the appearance. Right now the garnish doesn't do much for the appearance of the box. The chicken looks good though, good even glazing and the pieces are close to being the same size. A little attention to detail will improve the scores.

Awesome presentation...looks like chicken, not muffins! Makes me want to taste NOW..color is perfect, expertly sauced, attractive arrangement..be careful with garnish (upper right corner). A resounding 9 in my judgement

Not perfect, but looks dadgum appetizing to me! I'm not crazy about the thick syrup looking sauce, but it is applied well and the whole box looks excellent to me.
I'm sure that someone will point out that the top left thigh is separated too far from the center one, and that the thighs aren't all aligned the same, but come on people! This is all about how appetizing does this box look!!!

Well, that's a 9
Invariably, whenever the table captain shows me a box like this, I'm about to eat something really good.

Nice color and shine. I like thighs on the bone.

On the borderline of too much sauce. Also, if you're going to space the pieces out, try to space them evenly.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
