8 seems a little over sauce to me. otherwise looks pretty good

Dan KCBS CTC/MCBJ

Looks like this went thru a sauce shower. Without the extra sauce 9. As presented 8.

Bob

Score 7 - I'm not sure if this is considered pooling, but that is way too much sauce. I would at least question a disqualification.

I like the layout. Way over sauced. Sauce on the box and garnish hurts the score. Nice bark........................7

5 messy, too much sauce.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
1/6/2013 08:15:40 am

6 - The picture is so bad it's difficult to judge this box, but there is so much sauce, you can't really see the meat. It might be better if the picutre were better.

John - KCBS/MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MABA Judge
1/6/2013 08:56:00 am

7 - interesting different presentation. But, there's way too much gloppy sauce that is carelessly applied, seemingly by a sauce mop rather than delicately applied by a sauce brush. And, there's sauce splattered over the garnish and sides of the clamshell itself.

6
a very messy box, close to pooling your sauce

Paul KCBS/CBJ
1/6/2013 09:17:22 am

8 - Over sauced.

Lorne Rae

An 8. Excellent layout. Good color and sizing. Nice bark. Too much glazing for my liking.

Frank MCBJ
1/6/2013 09:58:00 am

7. Pork does not need this much sauce; this pork is probably very nicely cooked. Less sauce will also avoid the sloppiness of the sauce on the box and the garnish.

Paul KCBS CBJ
1/6/2013 10:07:38 am

I would give this box an 8. I like the symmetry and the overall presentation but the amount of sauce is excessive. I would wonder if it would be too gooey for me which takes away from how appetizing it appears.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
1/6/2013 10:19:00 am

Way too much sauce on this pork. I can't even hardly see the meat under all that sauce. I can only give this box a 6, average.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS
1/6/2013 10:40:15 am

This turn-in is just plain sloppy! More care with the sauce would be nice (also less sauce would help). Not appealing to me. 7

6 Goopy mess. Pass.

sjohnston
1/6/2013 12:19:02 pm

8-would be a 9 with a little less sauce-also need to clean up the box you have sauce everywhere-some spots could be seen as pooling. Sides of box is a mess also.
your pork looks good but clean it up for a better score

Ed KCBS MCBJ
1/6/2013 12:35:22 pm

You must have determined that the taste of your meat was sub-par and needed to soak it in some sort of liquid.
I would have to force my fingers in that box.
It is less than average so I'm in for a 5.

Make sure to clean up the goo from the edges of your box before turning it in. Very messy.

I'd give it a 7. Too much sauce spread on them.

Larry MCBJ
1/6/2013 02:34:33 pm

7 - Sauce all over the box and the meat looks oversauced.

Chaz d. Kcbs cbj

There are a lot of problems here. I'm sure some judges will love this box but in my opinion it borders on illegal. It would be up to the organizer but it looks sculpted. You are running an un necessary risk. Also, this is a prime example of over saucing. I wouldn't want to pick this up to eat it because it looks like candy. 7 if not dq'd

Fred KCBS

Everything a box should have 9

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=8 sloppy presentation but looks tasty

WAY TOO MUCH SAUCE!!! My understanding of competition barbecue is a balance of meat, smoke, and additives (sauce, rubs, injection, etc.). Sloppy box (I can ignore a sauce smear or two on the lid or other location where it could have been transferred through carrying or stacking, but this is ridiculous and NOT from transfer.
I love the flavor of pork, but find it difficult to imagine being able to taste pork on this entry.

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS
1/7/2013 01:19:33 am

7 - To much sauce on meat as well as the box. A clean and more organized box would have yielded a higher score.

Good looking box

Mercy KCBS/CBJ

Overly sauced. Box can't have droplets of sauce on it, looks sloppy. Meat looks good. 7

Score: 7; so much glaze the meat looks slimy.

Greg - cbjkcbs
1/7/2013 05:35:32 am

8 - I like the arrangement but it looks a little to heavy on the sauce or glaze. Back that down and I would have given a better score.

Gerard
1/7/2013 06:50:59 pm

8 The meat looks really tasty and I would really love to take a bite. I would use a little less sauce on the pulled pork and pay attention to the sauce in the box, in the right corner, it looks sloppy

Shawn
1/8/2013 09:05:35 am

I would give this a 6. Way to much sauce and looks sloppy with the sauce on the side of the box.

Tom Epler, CBJ PNWBA
1/9/2013 09:29:33 am

8, could go higher but am afraid that I could not taste the meat, just the sauce.

Bill C. KCBS CMBJ/CTC
1/9/2013 02:12:03 pm

7. There is way too much sauce on the meat. The arrangement is nice but I can't really evaluate the meat.

Suggestion: There is sauce splattered on the garnish and box detracting from the appearance.

6 I like the three cuts of meat but the meat look slimy because of all the glazing. This box does not look appetizing to me and does not want me to really try it.

Dwain
1/10/2013 04:09:29 am

7. I like the attempt at presentation but the sauce dripped on the box and garnish detracts from the overall appearance.

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/10/2013 01:31:20 pm

7 - Drips of sauce in several spots. Other than that, the meat looks good. I like the variety of offerings in the box. A bit heavy on the sauce/glaze, though.

BorisDogge KCBS CBJ
1/11/2013 11:33:33 am

To say the least the pork is drowned in sauce. The box looks sloppy. 7

Scott A. KCBS/CBJ

8
Might be excellent but certainly oversauced

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
