6 maybe 7
Very odd presentation. Meat looks pretty dry

Karen, KCBS CBJ

6- This is average looking pork with an unappealing arrangement. The box looks sparse and the meat looks slightly dry.

Paul KCBS/CBJ

7 - Dry looking in picture, may look better in person.

7 looks dull and drab. i would have like to see some char and perhaps a little moistening/glaze to give it a little pop!

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
1/27/2013 12:27:22 am

Score 7. Pork looks like it may be a great entry, but the amount of meat in the box is to stingy and the meat is buried in the garnish.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 9 - Pork looks very moist with excellent color, very nice arrangement with bark in every portion, overall a very nice looking box.

nice looking box 8

6 - clever arrangement of dry unappealing appearing pork. IMHO, if you're going to do an arrangement like this, the spokes of the wheel should be as similar in appearance as possible...just like the spokes of a wheel. And, NO, this is not marking or sulpting.

BBQ Critic
1/31/2013 06:24:01 pm

Kudos on illustrating your suggestion using your “spokes of the wheel” analogy. Makes it easy for the cooks (and judges) to envision.

7 The arrangement doesn't work for me, and too much green stuff, meat looks just about right however.

Frank KCBS MCBJ

8. What is there looks good. Not a fan of the presentation.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS
1/27/2013 02:54:30 am

score=7 could be good meat but needs more work on presentation

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/27/2013 03:35:48 am

7 - The meat looks above average, but the arrangement in the box is strange.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
1/27/2013 05:02:15 am

Ok looking pork box, maybe a little sparce on meat.
More bark is gooder.
Your presentation of a few pulled chunks does not show me some of the expertise of a expierenced cook.
Slightly above average 7

Neil CBJ/KCBS, FBA

8 - interesting arrangement although one or two of the samples appear to have less meat than the others. Pork looks moist and not over-cooked.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

Pork looks firm and tasty. Bark looks good. 8

Bill C. - MCBJ/CTC KCBS

8. Meat looks moist.

Kendall - CBJ

Not enough meat or too much garnish. I'd give it a 7.

Seaton Hall

Sorry but this is a 7 teetering on a 6. Meat looks dry, And too much green to meat ratio.

8. Pork looks very moist.

Nice idea for a box, just needs more meat I think to make it look fuller. Fuller box = better score. If there are slices of money muscle, put those in the middle, otherwise I would suggest filling the middle with chunks or more pulled pork. I'd give this box an 8.

Looks to be dry

Chaz D kcbs cbj

Interesting layout. My eye is continually drawn to the white hunk of lettuce in the middle. You might consider a healthy scoop of chopped to cover this area. The meat looks absolutely perfect! I'd give this one a 9 in person since I never judge the garnish.

BBQ Critic

Chaz – KUDOS! In ignoring the garnish. Great suggestion on garnish and scoring the meat ONLY.

Not real sure about this box? Is this been creative or would this be "marking"? Is this green leaf lettuce? Personal, I do not like the looks. I would give it a 8.

six---a pile of pulled in the middle may improve the appearance--and keep everything warmer too

8 - overall this box look pretty good. The only things is the portions are not the same.

8 - the presentation is pretty good. I like the different cuts of meat. The bark in the front appears to be dry but the rest of the meat looks good.

Getting past the "marked box" or "sculpted meat", which I honestly don't think that this is, in my humble opinion this meat looks pretty good. Not excellent, as it looks a wee bit dry (photo doesn't do the meat justice). I would prefer to see a variety of meat in the box, but we are to judge the box on its own merits, and to me this box is an 8.

BBQ Critic
1/31/2013 06:26:12 pm

Tom, KUDOS! On judging this box on its own merit. You judged the meat and yet were able to sneak in some positive suggestions. Nice job!

8. Loved the star, very original. Would have given you a 9 if you would have put some of the money meat in the center.

Dwain

7 -- above average. The top portion looks smaller than the other 5. Carefull you don't push the "Sculpting" rule by making a design with your entry.

8 Very attractive box-no choices for different sections of butt

Richard Markowitz
1/29/2013 04:35:33 am

Score = 6. Meat looks a tad dry & just doesn't look very appealing.

Suggestions: Put another chunk of meat in the middle to fill box a little more. Put a little bit of sauce or something on meat to look less dry.

Richard - KUDOS! on following the BBQ Critic scoring format to a tee (as outline on the right content bar in this section)! Your separation of the SCORE comments from your SUGGESTIONS help everyone to understand what impacted the final score. Excellent job! :-)

8-9 - I'm not a fan of the placement; the greenery is overwhelming, perhaps because there is so little pork in the box. However, in judging the pork, it's got good color, the bark looks good, the meat looks tender and moist. The piece on top looks like it could have a little fat in it, but it could be the picture.

Jim Simnett
1/30/2013 03:31:13 am

Solid 7, Meat looks great. I can see the smoke ring, I can see the bark. The pull looks good, not overly sauced. But I can't keep my eyes away from the green void in the middle. A small pile of chopped or shredded pork in the middle, we're talking an 8 or 9 box.

BBQ Critic
1/31/2013 06:29:29 pm

Jim, please be mindful that we do not take the SMOKE RING into consideration when judging in a KCBS competition. Thanks!

Borderline marking...I like it! 8.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
