8- little heavy looking on the sauce

Pretty nice looking box. Slices and chunks are tasty in appearance.
I think it's too saucy and coverage is a little uneven. I can see a dry spot. I hope I can taste your pork through the sauce.
I'll go very good 8.

7 Sauce heavy, otherwise an 8.

7 really uneven char on bark. Makes it looked overcooked. Try to make char appearance the same on pieces that you show char.

Score = 8: Sauce is uneven. If you are going to use a lot of sauce on your meat make sure it is spread evenly. I can see a couple of spots that don't have any sauce on them at all.

Due to the heavy sauce and this being a poor picture to judge from I am able to only give this entry a score of seven. It may score a eight if I actually could see the entry. but I would still deduct one point for the heavy saucing.

7 Nice bark. Too much sauce. Can't see the meat.

Suggestion: overlap the sliced MM so we can see how the meat looks.

8 Over sauced, pooling in box. Looks good though.

Picture is blurry but still looks like a good box of pork. Maybe a little too much sauce. 8

SCORE/REASONS: 7.5. Can not see interior of sliced pieces. Looks like too much sauce. Cuts are very thick.

9.....The meat looks moist with a nice bark and shine. Even cut slices.

Watch out for to much sauce. It will cost you points with some Judges. You're borderline the way it is.

Oversauced! Has lost appetizing appeal for me.
Question - when judging the "appearance of the meat only" as stated by the Table Captain, do you mark down if you can't see the meat for all the sauce (not necessarily in this photo, but in general)?

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/ comment 8 nice looking box, Good color, nice glaze looks a little thick but still nice, chunks could be a little straighter.

8 I so wanted to give this box a higher score but it's so oversauced its distracting. If the cook intended to have a glaze I can appreciate that as the cooks choice but it does make one wonder whats wrong with the meat that it needs all that sauce. If you want to glaze it do your best to make it even and appealing.

this box looks like they took time to nicely placed meat. I would give them a 7 since all the meat is not all the same size on the chunked meat. If it is pulled pork that would be accectable.

8 - the meat is just slightly over sauced.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
