BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

This one is really different. I would give this one a high 8. Not alot of meat, could have use a little more. But would love to taste.

Score 7. This entry appears to be overcooked and then was coated with sauce to cover the dry meat. Not very appealing.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Good color but it's a bit too dark; is it overcooked? Can't tell, but will judge that as part of taste & tenderness judging. understated sauce is good.

Suggestion/Comments: lighten up on the finished color just a little bit. Work on the layout of the pieces in front.

Score/Reasons = 8/The bark looks nice but the presentation doesn't allow for judging the meat underneath.

Score/Reasons = 7, meat looks overcooked and under sauced.Poor arrangement

Suggestions/Comments = show interior of meat. Put rear slices on more of an angle. Not sure about the front pieces. Looks like burnt ends.

please scratch my last post on this box. i thought i was still in the chicken boxes. it didn't look like chicken!
6 i'll stick with my original assessment that meat looks dry and the bottom section doesn't show the meat interior.

The meat looks a little burnt. The burnt ends on the bottom are not evenly cut. Not too much glaze.

9 - Interesting display, nice color

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
4/3/2014 01:53:27 am

Score/Reasons = 8. nice color and glaze. Some will say this appears dry, I doubt that's the case, but some of the smaller pieces may be.

Suggestions/Comments = Taste and tenderness will be challenging due to the variation in sizes of the pieces. The small end peice of the MM is going to be much different than the large middle piece. It would be nice to see the interior meat rather than only the bark.

7.......Nice bark and color but the meat looks dry. M/M evenly sliced. Chunks look disarranged-not pattern.

Sauce a little goopy. Sauce the sides not just the top.

Score = 8: Nice looking bark, would have liked to see the meat more. Meat looks a little dry to me.

Good stuff Maynard!!
A few more chunks would be advisable, the judge that gets a little piece is gonna be pissed. If you can't get the MM to lay tight to represent it as a whole then maybe arch it so it does't show alinement so much.
Easy very good 8.

8. Nice even color, look moist nice layout. However, the middle of the bottom arrangement appears random.

Larry MCBJ
4/3/2014 09:35:48 am

8 - The box looks sparse and unbalanced on the bottom.

Suggestion- Work on symmetry and careful on brush strokes as some will deduct for that. Could easily be a 9 box!

on appearance only I'd give it an 8 or 9, I'd be a little leery of turning this in at a contest, a cut up money muscle and a few cherry picked chunks might start sending some flags up with some of the judges..myself included.

Attractive box. Meat appears slightly overcooked, but still inviting. A 7.

8- The color looks great, nice shine.

Comment: I would like to see more variety in the box. I would score higher if there were some pulled meat in the box. The medallions are good but combining pulled, sliced and tubes would yield a higher score.

8 - may be a little dark on some of the pieces

Matt KCBS CBJ
4/7/2014 05:32:00 am

Score/Reasons = 8, maybe slightly overcooked, good looking bark, but there are brush marks in the sauce, box should be more "full"

Suggestions/Comments = None.

jaja01 KCBS CMBJ CTC
4/8/2014 07:11:48 am

Score/Reasons = 7, The money muscle should be even slices. The chunks should also be of equal size.

Suggestions/Comments = keeping the sizes even would improve the look and not including an end piece of muscle might increase the taste and tenderness scores because the ends are usually drier that the slices taken from the center.

Jason CBJ CSBBQA
4/8/2014 02:22:01 pm

SCORE: 6 - Pieces at the top are uneven and not cut uniformly. Not exactly sure what is going on in the bottom part of the box, kinda just looks thrown together. Hopefully that's not an attempt to sculpt the meat or arrange in in a way that would be identifiable to someone. I may consider checking with the table captain on that.

COMMENTS: There was plenty of space left over in the box, try to make better use of the space and spread out the meat at the top.

Usually when I see a box like this it's very dark and unappealing altogether. This one, the bark has a nice mahogany color to it, but the cook is under-selling the meat by only displaying the bark. Too little meat in the box, and not a very appetizing display.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
