BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score: 9

Poor picture quality but this is a well rounded sample and meat looks to be cooked perfect.

9
Generous portions of each selections. Pork isn't mashed to mush. Great bark.

Score 9
The camera angle does not really show the moistness of the pulled pork. You can see the moistmess on the sliced pork. Good looking box.

9 - nice color, meat looks moist, nice presentation.

Erle Smith; KCBS CBJ & CTC

8 - Generous portion of meat here with different sections of the butt available. Color of the bark looks good but the top row of meat could have benefited from an application of sauce. This is a good presentation with enough garnish to accent but not distract. Well done

Score/Reasons = 9/Great presentation of chunks, pulled and medallions! The meat looks wonderful, the bark is beautiful and the loins look moist and tasty.

7. Nice layout and arrangement. However, look dry and cubes are of different sizes.

Score = 9: Looks a little dry, but that might just be the photo, so giving it the benefit of the doubt.

A beautiful box. Excellent array of pieces. Really makes you want to dig in for a taste. A 9.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Nicely presented box of good looking pork. This would have been a 9 for me but for the left-most slice of MM, which appears ragged and disheveled compared to the rest of the slices. Maybe it's the very soft focus of the photo, but I can't tell and can only judge what I see in the pic.

Suggestions/Comments: If a piece is a bit raggedy, leave it out...especially if it's the "face" piece.

Score/Reasons = 7 Could be the picture, but looks a little dry. First slice looks jagged.

Suggestions/Comments = Strange arrangement for pork to look square. Was the cook trying to present burnt ends in a pork box?

william holladay ( SCBA)

8 - That is a high 8 because presentation is pretty good. But you have 8 money slices and I count 5 burnt ends or bark chunks, not enough for 6 judges. Also, you could have added a little bit of sauce to make it shine.

Tim Mornard
7/16/2014 01:33:23 pm

Very nice box - well balanced but pulled looks dry. A nice moist glaze would bump it up a point. 8

Score > 8

Two pieces on the bottom looked dark or burnt. As long as you have enough pieces for the judges, leave out questionable pieces.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
7/17/2014 01:58:04 am

Pretty dang nice! Varying thickness and missing bark on MM keep it from being excellent.
Very good 8.

I would have found the missing piece of bark and put it back in place.

Score/Reasons: 9; Very nicely done! Good example of a well constructed box.

Comments/Suggestions: There isn't much that could make this one look any nicer- it's already a top scorer! Wish I could taste it!

Score/Reasons = 8, glancing at this entry it strikes me as very dark, be it sauce or whatever, just lacks that WOW I expect for excellent.

Suggestions/Comments = lighten up the photo!!! The meat arrangement is okay, but looks too cubic (not a scoring factor, but visually off-putting). I sure hope the sauce doesn't overpower the flavor of the pork!

Looks nice. In the photo appears dry and a tad too dark on the slices for me.

Score/Reasons = 8, overall looks pretty good. Only comment concerns the first slice of muscle meet. It looks too dark on top and roughly cut. I do like the different cuts included in the box.

Suggestions/Comments = Pick meats the look close to each other in color. Careful while cutting the meat to make sure the cut is smooth and not ragged.

Eric CMBJ
7/17/2014 09:59:59 am

Score/Reasons = 9, Looks fresh, moist and "natural" (not too perfect).

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges might ding the darker money muscle on the left. You have enough to not include those pieces. Additionally, if all of the MM pieces were the same color, you might consider putting a "prettier" piece as the showcase piece on the end (left). Sometimes the natural end pieces are not as visually appealing as the middle pieces. Either don't use them or hide them in the middle.

Score = 9

I am assuming that the dry appearance is due to the photo. Maybe a spritz or two to add moisture mite help with the look. However, this is a full box of meat, carefully arranged, that I would look forward to tasting. Nice box!

Jean

8 very nice
Needs to get a sharper knife, to make cleaner cuts on the money muscle. Some cuts are very jagged.

7 The layout looks good. Good color on top row the middle row looks moist. The pieces on the bottom are different sizes and the first piece looks dry.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
