eight looks good

think if the slices would look better if reversed

7. Slices are very thick appearing and side piles look very "wet". The picture may not be doing it justice but based on the few second quick look like we get, it apppears piles are mushy.

The chopped stuff in front looks really good. Kind of a different shape to the slices. Don't like the seeds in the sauce/juice seen on the slices. Excellent looking bark. Kind of a bluish tint to the picture making it hard to judge the color of the slices. Would have liked to have seen this one in person (and tasted it)

Suggestion: Could be wrong but the top slice looks laced with fat. I'm a fat lover and would like to see more (Especially on brisket dang it!) but some judges will deduct. I'd have hidden that piece

8--Almost a 9 . A few goobers on meat and slices should be spaced a little better. Meat looks great

Average. , too much shredded for my eyes. Slices could have more uniform placement. The meat does look moist, that is good.

8 - Would be a 9 if the goobers were taken off the slices and the box was cleaned.

s/r, 8/9 the picture is not that good but i really like the meat, and the thick cuts of pork, not over sauced, the pulled is very well presented. the bark makes me want to eat this as soon as possible

7 maybe. All the meat has a purple tint to it, I'm hoping it's just a bad picture. The pork other than the slices looks mushy and not real appetizing, not even a spec of bark in that. Looks like something the cat threw up. Not sure about those slices, they look pretty thick and with that color and shape might be from a can of Spam.

i like the concept of the arrangement but not the execution. Need to tighten up the piles if leaving the ends exposed. It may be the lighting but overall the color just isn't right. The pulled looks too sauced and the sliced, while not bad per say, doesn't add anything for me. I like the effort.

Slices appear undercooked and is sliced with the grain; not appetizing. Nice looking bark, but that's about it. The mashed portion looks like cat food, IMHO. It reminds me of the pork created by a particular restaurant around here that actually managed to stay in business for almost a year... I hope the taste on this is rockin' because it's not appetizing to me.

I would give this box an 8, BUT only because there is some residue on the box, and the top piece of meat looks like it has some slicing remnants on it; clean it up, and it's a 9; nice bark, pieces are uniform and you put both slices and pulled in the box. Appears to be moist, looks like you've got some spice or something going on in the sauce, would like to take a bite!

Score: 7

First of all the slices in the middle are not uniform in size. Some are cut big and some are cut smaller. Also I dont like the way they are turned and I think the bark should be away from me because I want to see the flesh of your meat. Also the slices look like they were thrown in box in a hurry. Most likely the box has not even been transported yet and they are already not evenly placed. Also there looks to be chucks of sauce on the slices. The first pile looks to be thrown in there as well and has left some debris on the front of the box all the way over to the first slices.

Suggestion: Be sure to clean your box. Make sure slices are evenly cut and placed in box. Make sure to brush sauce out. Also the the garnish looks sloppy in the box and could be place better in the box.

CBJ, BBQ Brethren Judge
I would say that this box is average, so I'd give it a 6. The colors are monochromatic and the pulled pork looks shredded. On the other hand, the box seems to symmetrical and well organized. The slices are regular in size, but the spacing is uneven.

cbj/comp cook prolly an 8 pulled meat looks a little mushy and the sauce looks a little messy.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
