Please oh great BBQ deity, let me judge some pork like this soon.

Score: 6

Is this Pork or Turducken? Reason I say that is you got way to much going on and it looks like 3 different meats in there. I dont like the chunky pork in the front. If they were burnt ends it would be one thing but they are not. The pulled pork is to thick and needs to be pulled more. The burnt ends on each side of the box would look better if they were more uniformed in size like the chunks in the front of the box.

On side note, I think your garnish looks really good.

7. Above average box of pork, but resembles an "organized mess". Keep it simple.

cbj/comp cook, I give it an 8, the money muscle looks a little dry and would look better if it had some bark on it too, also if you would use more parsley to raise the meat higher in the box I think would help make the meat jump out at you.I like the design with all of the different parts of the butt it just needs to be tweeked a little,I.M.H.O

9. Can I have this box all to myself???? To me this is a perfect box. Can't wait to taste it.

Not perfect, but looks excellent to me! LOTS of meat in the box, and different types to try. I like the arrangement too. Some are going to criticize the weird shape of the money muscle, but that's pretty picky.

Looks appetizing. Nice organization.

7 - Excuse me while I vent a little on my pet peeve. In this box you've given me pork done 4 ways, which almost guarantees a lower score. I'll bet that one or two of the selections are not as good as the others, so the score averages lower than it would for just the best.

In any case, the stuff in front looks a little dry, and the pieces might look better in order. The box looks cluttered, the stuff in the middle doesn't really attract me. On the plus side I'm interested in the sliced on top and the chunks along the side. They look delicious and if it were just them in the box I probably would have gone 8 or 9.

9 - I like the display, with all types of pork in the box; it doesn't look dry, bark looks good, it all looks great, I can almost smell it!

8+

Money muscle and plugs look great. Burnt ends on the sides look good but are spread out too far. Cubes at the bottom are just OK and don't add much, especially since I can't see any bark.

Tighten up the box, maybe a spritz and this becomes a 9 for me.

Kendall - CBJ

I'd give it an 7. It looks overly busy to me. Pick 1 or 2 different cuts/formats to include.

Dick - CBJ

Score 7. I know this cook took a lot of time with the preparation of this box, but I believe they would score higher if they reduced the different number of offerings and placed more equal sized pieces of meat and more of each to balance the box and not confuse it with too many selections.

9 Neat, well presented box.

Note- Thick slices always make me think it's overcooked/mushy. However that's a later test.

Way too much going on here. Some of the pork looks pretty dry. Less is more!

9 Beautiful box.

Plenty of options for the judges to choose from. Could cause an issue when taste and tenderness judged. We're obligated to taste each "cut" of the sample and come up with a score reflecting everything we sample.

Looks great!

Wayyyy too much going on here. I hate to judge down a box where the meat looks good but to judge this box I have to grab no less than four hunks of meat. I also think adding the burnt ends is a quick way to make up for no bark in the rest of the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
