9 wonderful symmetry and beautiful colors

Ron Haag

8. They look good but I want to see the cut side.
If you turn them a little to show the meat would help your score from me

Paul KCBS/CBJ
3/8/2013 10:36:48 pm

8 - Picture makes them too dark, probably looked a lot better in person easily a 9 with a better look.

Comments: Even trimming of each rib is key, leave out the odd trimmed rib.

8 good box

jim v mcbj
3/8/2013 11:15:15 pm

8 a little too much sauce.

Fred KCBS

Very nice 9

Eggspert, KCBS CBJ

Score: 8-9
Comments: Great color. This is a solid rib box. To get a solid 9, clean up the cutting and take the one rib out (1st row, left side) with the big reveal, it's too distracting and looks different then the rest of the bones.

Looks dadgum appetizing, but has a few problems. Uneven saucing and cuts, appears oversauced, and the bone sticking out on the left rib is distracting, but looks very tasty!

8--looks very good--but crooked cut on tight and one bone showing on left are distracting

Bill F
3/9/2013 01:37:49 am

8 Generous selection, color good, sauce somewhat heavy, slicing well done.
Suggestion: Eliminate the left most pieces with bone showing.

Frank KCBS MCBJ
3/9/2013 01:38:14 am

8. - Difficult to judge - possibly a 9. The color is great, the sheen does not indicate over saucing.

Suggestion: Work on the placement. The far right rib leaves a gap due to the uneven cut. The rib on the bottom left has more bone revealed than the others. As a result the box seems a little unbalanced.

Lorne Rae

6. The ribs are well arranged and look moist and are of similar color. However, knife skills result in some rough and not parallel cuts. The ten samples make the box look over crowded and so half of them are half hidden from view.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep. MBN & MABA Judge

9 - nice looking ribs. Not perfect, but nice.

Suggest putting sauce on naked left-most exposed bone. Right two ribs could have been matched better. #2 bone from riight appears to be crookedly sliced.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS
3/9/2013 01:52:59 am

Score these ribs an 8, possibly higher in person. Ribs are uniform in size and just a pinch too much sauce. The bone tips on the two left ribs are a distraction.

9......Nice box of ribs. Good color and sauce. Uniform size

Paint the bone tips. The naked bone is a distraction.

score=9
i would have liked to see the sides of the meat

9. Great looking ribs!

Seaton Hall

9. that's 10 of the straightest ribs I have ever seen.

Tina Cannon KCBS CBJ
3/9/2013 09:19:08 am

8 but really 8.5 if allowed the one bone stands out and distracts from the entire presentation.
Perhaps of you coated that bone it would not have stuck out lake a sore thumb. Good even cuts and pretty gloss and color, really wanted to give a 9.Remove the top and bottom left ribs and recenter and it would be perfect

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
3/10/2013 04:09:44 am

Score = 9, Excellent looking ribs.

Cuts look a little uneven, but not enough to lower the score.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
3/10/2013 04:39:19 am

One long exposed bone is quite distracting. Some minor bad cutting lines on right front ribs.Glaze is fairly even, almost too heavy.
Real close to being very good 8 but not quite there, so above average 7 today.

Kendall - CBJ
3/10/2013 12:46:53 pm

Looks great, I'd give it a 9.

mike cannon
3/10/2013 01:03:33 pm

7 - show bones on all or none. looks odd like this.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
3/10/2013 04:26:10 pm

Score/Reasons: 8/Good color and appears to be well prepared; however, there is too much sauce on the ribs and the top is the only part of the rib that is exposed, so there's no way to tell what the meat looks like.

Suggestions/Comments: Ensure that there is some way to judge the appearance of the meat.

David

I would give an 8, would like to see a side profile.

Bill kcbs cbj

This could be a 9 in person but that rib on the right obviously does not go with the rest of the slab. Otherwise it looks tastey

Shawn-KCBS CBJ
3/11/2013 06:17:32 am

I would score this box an 8 due to the rib on the top left looks like it is missing a chunk. Looks so good someone could not wait!

Johnny Young
3/11/2013 11:19:12 am

8 - the symmetry is off and the rib on the right seem to off to itself and not grouped with the other ribs.

Jim S. KCBS CBJ
3/12/2013 12:21:17 am

Appearance Score: 7
The ribs look very wet, over sauced.

FYI: My eye keeps getting drawn to the "Grand Canyon" on the right side of the picture. All the ribs edge to edge took nice. The crack is very distracting.

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/12/2013 05:24:05 am

SCORE/REASONS: 8 - Very good looking ribs - I really like the color on these. Only reason not a 9. slightly crooked slicing on the front right piece.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Good looking ribs - I'd be happy with those.

FP-CBJ
3/26/2013 06:47:53 am

SCORE/REASONS: 9

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: The saucing looks just a little heavy and some of the ribs aren't uniform. However, it looks delicious and I want it.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
