Score = 9

Really tough to find anything wrong with this presentation. Pieces look moist, meaty, and uniform. Color is not too dark or too light. Great presentation....

9 nice color

David - MCBJ/KCBS

Score - 8 - ribs are a bit unevenly sliced.

Another dark picture. Score an 8. They look shiny and not oversauced.

Mike Cannon

7 - cut is ragged - bones showing - lighter than I like

Moonpie
11/19/2013 01:02:10 am

7... ok color... those bones look dry and as if there has been a lot of shrinkage. In person it might score better but also maybe not.

Suggestion. I can't do what I am about to suggest as well as most pro cooks but the box needs to really grab the judges attention and make them want to eat. Although the parsley isn't judged, it can help with what I am suggesting. if the ribs are elevated more and really pronounced, which can be done with the parsley, then it draws the judge into the box more.

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color, not too much sauce - very appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = None

8 - Uneven cuts

Score/Reasons = 8, overall the box looks good. The only thing though, is the dark area on the lower part of the ribs. Otherwise, they look good.

Suggestions/Comments = Take care to not allow the ribs to blacken up. It appears part of the ribs was over the hotter parts of the grill and therefore darkened up on one end.

Tiffany

Score/Reasons = 8, glazing even

8 - Color appears mostly from the sauce, looks a little pale. Top ribs appear very dark at the bottom.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
11/19/2013 03:34:29 am

Score/Reasons: 8 - nice naturally looking meat. Not oversauced. But, the top row of ribs are unevenly sliced, particularly the left edge of the left-top rib is a bit ragged.

Suggestions/Comments: Tidy up the edge(s) and maybe add another row of ribs to help even up the greenery around the edges...there's lot so green left & right, but none top & bottom.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons = 9/Nice color, the ribs are symmetrical and appetizing! Great looking ribs!

9 Couldn't make up my mind, almost didn't make the cut.
Thinking the rack could have been trimmed more evenly.

8- Not overly sauced, but samples are slightly uneven. Good looking box though.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 9. Great looking ribs. Good color and a nice amount of sauce. Would love to sample these ribs.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
11/19/2013 06:35:15 am

Score = 9: Photo is kind of dark and it is hard to get a good look at the ribs. I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and score them on what I can see. Might be lower in person though.

I would score this box a 9. Looks awesome!

Suggestion: Would not change a thing. Looks great!

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

Score: 9 Solid entry

Comments: If I had to critique something it would be that the cuts aren't quite uniform, but pretty darn close! NICE box

Score 9 Nice color and I like the pull back on the bone.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 9, looks dad-gum appetizing to me. Not perfect, but it doesn't have to be!

Suggestions/Comments = Almost looks dry, but not enough to keep it from being excellent!

Score = 9.

Great looking ribs...would love to try them.

9....Good color. Nice even glaze. Even cuts.

Any criticism would be nit picking.

Matt KCBS CBJ
11/21/2013 12:17:20 pm

Score/Reasons = 8, good cuts, sauce is a bit over done, but nice color

Suggestions/Comments = May be a tad too tender/over cooked - telltale meat on the far left side of the rib in the front row, but would have to bite to tell. Overall, not bad, but they need to be tighter in the box.

Steve R - KCBS CBJ

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
