Score = 6

Pieces are uniform but the glaze is extremely heavy. It's almost the consistency of jelly which overshadows the presentation. Because of the heavy glaze, I can't tell if the pieces look moist and the color is also affected by the glaze. Too bad...box has a lot of promise but saucing is way to much.

8 very dark and over sauced

David - MCBJ/KCBS

Score - 8 Sauce way too thick and uneven

Score an 9, just for the creativity in the presentation. The ribs look well done and have a shine to them.

Moonpie

7... too dark and too much sauce

Suggestion... also try to trim the ribs more uniformly. Some judges take off for that.

Score/Reasons = 7, way too much sauce to properly judge the meat.
Suggestions/Comments = None

7 - Over sauced and looks charred.

Score/Reasons = 7, The ribs are extremely over sauced and, to me, is not very appetizing., Putting so much sauce on the meat makes one think something is being hidden.

Suggestions/Comments = Do not over sauce any meats. It is unappetizing to me. Let the meat shine on its own.

7 - Way too much sauce, looks too dark and sticky to me.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
11/19/2013 03:43:14 am

Score/Reasons: 7, maybe 8 in person. Ribs are oversauced. Box has an unbalanced appearance. The layout arrangement may have been dictated by the vastly different lengths of the rib's bones used in this box. i.e., the left & right "vertical" ribs appear to be of different length that the "horizontal" ribs.

Suggestions/Comments: If you have a situation where you must use ribs of differing lengths, stacking them "doggy style" would help even out the bone lengths by hiding the differing bone lengths beneath the top layer of ribs.

Score/Reasons = 7/Too much sauce and too dark; placement is a little sloppy! This is nitpicking, I know, but there has to be identifiable distinctions to separate the winners and losers.

7 Too much bark and heavy sauce appears to try to hide it.

8- Sauced about right, samples are even, color seems dark - could also be the photo. Very Nice.

Score 7. These ribs are buried in a, too dark, too thick , and too much sauce to score them any higher. It appears that with this heavy coating of sauce that they might be overcooked also.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
11/19/2013 06:34:10 am

Score = 8: Size of ribs is very uneven which doesn't look pleasing to my eye. Photo is kind of dark as well, hard to get a good look at the ribs. Sauce looks a little uneven as well.

Shawn-CBJ and Comp Cook

I would score this box a 7. Ribs are trimmed nicely!

Suggestion: Less sauce and lighter color.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
11/19/2013 10:32:09 am

Score: 7 Uneven cute and over-sauced a bit

Comment: Nice color but the cuts and sizes are pretty uneven and it may be the pic but they look really wet. I like a moist looking rib but these will require a lot of towels.

Score 8 Bottom rib looks like it may be dry or I would give a 9.

Some may mark down due to dark color. I don't know if it is due to over smoking or the sugar content in the rub.

11/20/2013 03:26:02 am

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and appetizing, bordering on too much sauce, but still excellent.

Suggestions/Comments = more similar in size and shape would help make this box more attractive. Strange layout, different than normal straight across or two layers.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8.

Ribs look over done and too much sauce.

9.....Nice color. Meat looks moist.

Sauce on the verge of being to heavy. Sauce the rib bone showing on the bottom inside of the left rib.

Matt KCBS CBJ
11/21/2013 12:38:29 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, Parts of the ribs look a bit dry or overcooked, unevenly sized pieces

Suggestions/Comments = I can see the brush marks in the sauce - thats distracting, Make sure to cut into evenly sized pieces, try the 4 across the front and back method of presentation, this looks a bit sloppy.

Steve R - KCBS CBJ

Great looking presentation but just a little bit too much sauce for my liking. Scored an 8.
Looks like a bit too much garnish, but did not factor into the score.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
