BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - too orange - might have trimmed the bones better.

Doyle Hill
2/26/2014 02:30:53 am

8 - Nice looking box except for the uniformity of the ribs.

Lorne Rae
2/26/2014 02:40:09 am

7. Good color, nice arrangement. Look moist. However, ribs are of different widths and the knife skill on the lower left rib produced a bow rather than a straight line.

Score/Reasons = 8, Tough to score due to the poor photo. Color looks good, light glaze.

Suggestions/Comments = Poor focus. Neaten up the garnish an the sauce on the box.

Dennis
2/26/2014 03:44:35 am

Score 9
Comment > Sauce needs to have a more even (no globs) application. Some judge may lower score for lack of a consist appearance.

Mike CBJ, KCBS, GBA
2/26/2014 03:53:03 am

9- Nice cuts, uniform in size, good color, overall good ribs.

Comment: Looks like a little too much sauce dripping down at the bottom of ribs one and three. Also, fill in the hole below rib #3.

I give this one an 8.

JohnnyY/CBJ,NCBS,NCPC,KCBS
2/26/2014 04:42:26 am

Score/Reason - 7; This site is for judging Competition presentations, with that said, more attention should be given to this category that is being presenting. Appearance is what is being judged and it should be first rate. This presentation lacked appeal and the arrangement of the pieces were loosely formed. (symmetry and neatness of box0

Suggestions/Comments: There are online resources that give examples of Turn-in boxes and how to prepare them. It would be helpful if these are reviewed. If you are using various pieces in you box, it would be advantageous to group like pieces together.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

8 - the ribs look well cooked and sauced - but the whole presentation is a bit 'tossed in the box'.

Score 9
Nice looking box. Not too much sauce. I'd like to taste one now

Score = 9

Nice box of ribs...uniform size and not a lot of sauce. Its hard to be sure from the picture but they might be a little under cooked.

8- Good color, appear to be moist and well trimmed. Good looking box of ribs.

I would have put the bottom row on top, they look like they are cooked properly. Good looking but a 7.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reason = 7/Shoddy placement and the sauce looks a little gloppy! However, the picture is really blurry, which doesn't help!

Brad Kohl

7-nice color and sauce is not too heavy, just a little sloppy on placement in box, although garnish isn't supposed to be judged, use it to your advantage to help support the meat

Score 9. Great color, nice amount of sauce, good looking box. Poor picture.

8 - Unequal cuts.

7.....Meat may be undercooked. Uneven sauce. Black stuff under the left rib is distracting and not very appetizing.

Do a better garnish job. Turn the ribs around and line them up.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks pretty good for the out-of-focus photo that it is. Not evenly sauced, but still looks appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = frame the meat with garnish, the end with the bone sticking out might look better up instead of down (not judging points, just suggestions)

Score/Reasons = 8, the color is off, too red. May be better in person.

Suggestions/Comments = suggest use a less red sauce or put is back on grill to get some caramelization which would break up the color

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, Rib on right hand side is lighter in color.

Comment: Would have been better to hide that rib in the back.

Bobby Whitefield

A blurry photograph makes it difficult to evaluate. Cuts appear even and color seems good. I might give it a 9 if I could see the entry better.

Rib placement is the only default for this entry.
Smooth out your presentation and your very good 8 turns into an excellent 9.

Score/Reasons 7 Nice color and sauce, arrangement of the ribs could have been little better.

Suggestions/Comments Garnish is too sparse. Garnish should either frame the meat as in a picture frame or no garnish at all.

Bob CBJ/KCBS
3/5/2014 02:05:41 am

Score: 8 Nice uniform samples. Uneven saucing.
Suggestion: Pay more attention to even saucing. Although not a judging factor, more attention to the garnish on all sides would highlight the samples.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ CTC and Comp Cook
3/5/2014 09:30:32 am

I would score this box an 8. Color is a little light.

Suggestion: Try to fill in the gaps between each rib so it look like one slab of ribs.

Bob in Corona, KCBS/CBJ
3/6/2014 07:39:34 pm

SCORE/REASON: 7 - Nice looking ribs. More attention to details such as uniform saucing and rib placement will help improve score.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
