BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8- The ribs have a great color and shine; the two ribs on the side look a little dry and the taper or those ribs detracts from the overall appearance.

Mike Cannon

5 - hate the bones on their sides. If the two outside bones had been left out, I would have scored a 9.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

8 not a fan of the profile look, brings a feeling of disapointment because of the range of thickness

Doyle Hill
2/26/2014 02:45:26 am

8 - Nice color and arrangement. I would brush some drippings on the ones on their side, they look dry otherwise a 9.

Lorne Rae
2/26/2014 02:57:38 am

8. Good color, look moist and the unique arrangement is eye appealing. However, one rib is noticeably smaller and another has a tapered rather than a parallel knife cut.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9, Nice color, light/medium saucing.

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges will not care for this arrangement. Keep the sauce off the bones. Either don't sauce the sides showing or do it lightly and evenly for the best scores.

Score 9
Comment> NIce color.

I give this box an 8. The ribs on edge seem very thin on the end, and not very appealling.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC
2/26/2014 04:56:11 am

8 - the centered ribs look perfect - but the two on their sides appear to have had some random swipe of sauce (or maybe a saucey hand mark) at their mid-point - which throws me a little off the 9.

Score 9
Another nice looking box. I like the way the 2 ribs on the side are turned on their sides. This gives another prespective as to how the ribs should look. Not too much sauce

Ike, CBJ KCBS

Score = 9

I think we judged these earlier but I still like the looks of this box. The fact that the sides are showing and only half sauced just show me the meat is done.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Nice color and most appear moist. The two samples on the sides
appear to be drier.

Scotty
2/26/2014 10:45:53 am

I'm betting overcooked, ones on the end look dry, 6.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
2/26/2014 01:44:15 pm

Score/Reason = 9/Nice color, placement of ribs on their side shows nice color of the internal meat as well; not too much sauce.

Comment/Recommendation = Because of the shape of the ribs on their side, the rib at the top is offset. Not a big deal, but avoid that if possible. Most judges won't look for that, but if it stands out, some will take off for it.

Brad CBJ/KCBS

9-nice color, nice glaze, meat looks moist even on sides

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
2/26/2014 03:48:41 pm

Score 9. As with comment cards this box really doesn't need a comment, but great display, proper amount of sauce, good color, and just a great entry.

8...Good color. Nice sauce with a shine. Meat looks a little dry.

Make a neater box. Line up the ribs and close the gaps between them.

Larry MCBJ

8 - Middle 4 not centered in box.

THIS IS THE SAME BOX ALREADY SCORED AS "RIBS BOX 182".

Score/Reasons = 8, tops look moist, but sides look dry. Uneven cuts, uneven sizes, and unevenly sauced/coloration.

Suggestions/Comments = if you are going to put sauce on the sides of the ribs, then cover the entire side, not just a smear.

Score/Reasons = 9, even though there is a slight too much sauce, this box looks good. I like the way the cook shows off the cut surfaces.

Suggestions/Comments = Just use a bit less sauce

Score = 9: Great box of ribs.

Bobby Whitefield

Nice color with just the right amount of glaze. Cuts are even and ribs are well presented. Very inviting. A solid 9..

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 7. The ribs in the center look great. The ribs on their side look dry.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
2/28/2014 12:39:44 am

Not a fan of the side view! It shows how thin the meat is as well as the unappetising knuckles. Cuts and texture are pretty good, but placement is kinda haphazard.
I think your entry is above average, so here's a 7

8 - Ribs look good but do not like the two on their side

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ
2/28/2014 03:29:33 am

Score/Reasons = 8, Meat looks moist with good even color. The two ribs on thier side is distracting and takes away from the flat lying ribs.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/reason 8 nice color, little over sauced, could be cut a little straighter making a more uniform size

8 - nice presentation, nice looking product. The edge pieces are distracting to the rest, color and moisture on these two brought my score down.

Ronnie B KCBS-CBJ MBN-Judge

7-ribs different length, pieces on edge need a little sauce

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/4/2014 04:53:50 am

Score/Reasons = 9, good color, even cooking, no burned spots, looks excellent overall!

Suggestions/Comments = I'm not a big fan of the "putting one sideways" box placement, but that didn't affect my scoring. I would tighten them up and put 8 in the box.

Score/Reasons 7 nice color, arrangement could be a little more together. The ribs on the side distract from the overall appearance.

Suggestions/Comments Even out the garnish, and garnish looks like it needed to be revived in water.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ CTC and Comp Cook

I would score this box a 7. Color is light.
Suggestion: Try to get the ribs all from 1 slab instead of mix and matching.

Bob in Corona KCBS/CBJ
3/6/2014 08:35:10 pm

SCORE/REASON: 7 Rib on right appears overcooked. Sauce need to be more even (thumb print on 2nd from bottom). Looks like a foreign object on right side rib.

SUGGESTIONS: Be cautious of particles in the sauce, ie 1/8" rule. When selecting racks, may want to find ones with more even meat distribution. Also using a competition cut will help.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
