BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

score: 8 Nice square and even cut.

Comments: a glaze would definitely lift it to a 9.

I would score this box 8. Looks good but I think it would look better if the ribs were turned around.

Ira Trexler

I would give this box a 9. Each looks uniform and the color is nice. I would like to see a bit darker color but it looks good enough to eat

Wayne KCBS/CBJ

Score/Comments = 8 (as presented) More possibly a 9 in person. The photographic white balance in this photo is off and not true forcing some assumption on color of the ribs. The arrangement is well organized, balanced and the 9 ribs fill the box nicely. The slicing is neat and I like the consistent pull-back on the bones. Some minor inconsistencies are noticeable in the sauce.

Comments - Explore the white balance settings on your camera and take some test photo's with a variety of lighting situations.

Score 9 Not too much sauce, the ribs are shiny and fairly even

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score / reason 8 good color, slices could be a little more uniform and placed straighter in box, rib in back on left side is bigger than the front giving it a uneven appearance.

Score: 9

I was waffling between 8 and 9, so you get the nine. You would have done this, but make sure to clean up the box. That was distracting my eye from the meat. Looks good, let me know if you need any samplers!

Score: 7, doesn't look like the best ribs were selected to be in the front row which is the most prominent area in the box. These could have been trimmed up a little neater before cooking. All that fat on top of #3 and 4 does make for the best appearance.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 8. Too much fat showing on the 3rd and 4th rib in the front row.

Score/Reasons: - 9 - a very nice box of beautifully presented ribs. Great color & prudent glaze of sauce.

Suggestions/Comments: The only thing wrong with these ribs is they are not on a plate in front of me. Great job by the pitmaster.

Score/Reasons = 9, nice coloring and layout.

Suggestions/Comments = It's obvious that this pitmaster knows what they're doing.

8- Great over all color, though slightly uneven. Unable to determine if the darker spots are sauce or cooked in. Nice box.

Nice color and arrangement. The sauce appears uneven

I would give this one a high 8. Just not quite a 9.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9

Ribs are uniform in size and sauce and without being able to see the sides to judge for doneness I can see no reason to score lower.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9, Nice looking ribs

Comment: Color is a little uneven, but that might be from photo so I gave benefit of the doubt and didn't score down for that.

Score/Reasons = 9, NOT perfect, but still looks very good!

Suggestions/Comments = might want to spritz the ribs again so that they all look evenly moist (left top rib is starting to look a little dry) - didn't affect my score.

Score/Reasons = 9, on the top ribs, it looks like the sauce is not applied evenly, there are lighter spots. Look good though.

Suggestions/Comments = just make sure all the meat is sauce equally.

8 - Uneven cuts..

Score 8. I would like to see a slightly darker color on the ribs, but this is still a very nice entry.

9. Look great, but the black burnt specks are not appetizing.

9...Nice color. Evenly cut ribs. Good sauce and shine.

Clean the sauce off the box.

Again, no reason to not call it excellent, 9.

Note, clean up the edges of the box.

Bob CBJ/KCBS

Score 8 Nice uniform samples. Looks moist.

Picture is yellowed, making the color a little more difficult. If a brighter, non yellow effect, might have given a 9.

9 - I like the look, a couple of the pieces look a little dark but that might be the photo........not enough to deduct points.

James Vredenburg

7, Looks nice. Would like to see be more uniform in width of the ribs.

Rick KCBS CBJ,CTC

Score/Reasons = 8 (maybe 9 in person). Box is nice and full. Ribs look to be moist, fairly evenly sliced with a nice color. Sauce not evenly spread.

Suggestions/Comments = Try to evenly distribute sauce across all ribs. Since you're the only one who has handled this box, clean up sauce on edges of box. Overall, a very nice entry. I would enjoy sampling this box!

Art KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8 Good presentation. Ribs look good. Saucing looks a little uneven.
Suggestion/Comments= Clean up sauce marks on container (bottom left and right) Though judges are not supposed to grade down for sauce on the container, it does distract from the overall appearance.

william holladay (scba)

8= score based on appearance issues only. sauce is unevenly applied. ribs are not sized the same. front row bones have more meat showing. there are sauce marks on the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
