They look really good. Would have been a 9 if they were cut more even, or if I could see if the cut edge looked as moist as the bark

I'd give it a 9. Well balanced and good presentation. I think I would be able to see the cut edge in person, but that angle isn't shown in this picture.

9- very nice color and the presentation of the meat at the angle sets the entry apart from others and is genuinely visually appealing.

7 , too much pullback on ribs, they look evenly cooked but by placing the pulled back end on top thats the first thing I see, next time place clean cut side of St. Louis on top and place pulled back ends on bottom, that way you can hide them in garnish.

eight--looks pretty good but some unevenness in rib size detracts

Hard to find fault with the appearance on this one. The presentation is attractive and well-thought out. Would be eager to take a bite of this one.

Not much way to make ribs look any better.

I would agree that bones on the bottom would be a better presentation, but there just really isn't much else to criticize.

I have to take exception with those that talk about too much pullback. that is up to the pig to determine, not the cook, and meaty spares usually do pull back quite a bit...moreso thatn Baby backs.

Uneven cut? come on. I sure hope I don't get you at the judges table for my entries. Please remember when you judge, we are judging BBQ, not graphic arts.

Master CBJ
I have been a judge for three years now and at most of the contests I have been to the reps say " If you are hung between two numbers give the higher score"
So this box gets a 9. Yes, I can see the bone and one rib is a sixteenth wider but I want this box all to myself.

Score of 9. I think that Kendall, Rita, and especially Tim have really judged this box correctly. Other judges please rethink you scores and comments. There is no way the cook can control the size or unevenness of the cuts or the pullback. This is a fact that will exist with all ribs. A judge using this criteria and lowering scores is being unfair to a cook and is the reason many cooking teams do not respect judges. Please rethink your scores.

9 and I am a picky son bitch. pullback on the bone. that is the pig's fault. don't judge for tenderness when you are looking at appearance.

Make the ribs more uniform in width. Otherwise, great looking ribs!

Dick, you're mistaken and a cook can control the width. Whether they can control it or not, it's just not quite as appetizing as it could be, and for that it's an 8 rather than a 9. Very nice color, but the bottoms are a little blackened.

9 - Ribs look good. A little dark on the bottom os some of the ribs, but I'm still giving it a 9. This is a great presentation idea for those racks of ribs that you have to cut at an angle because of the bones.

I'll give this one a 9. Yes, the width is a tad off, there's a bit of blackening on the bottom ends and I'm hoping that I could see the cut side of the meat in a side view, but all in all it's a fine looking display that makes me want to dig right in!

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
