BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 looks like good bbq'd chicken, breast meat looks juicy

ends of legs look a tad dark

7 looks pretty good but skin looks dry which gives the appearance of dry meat which may not be the case. uneven char doesn't help eithe.r i would add some glaze to perk up the appearance and maybe mitigate the uneven char.

7 - the chicken looks dry. There isn't anything in the box that just pops out at you. The pieces on the edges don't appeal to me at all.

Score/Reasons = 6 looks dry, too many different parts of the chicken. A breast taste different from a leg, a leg tastes different than wing.

Suggestions/Comments
A Rep once told us that you are actually competing against yourself when submitting so many different parts of the chicken. One part may be perfect, another part maybe drier, overcooked, etc.

Improve the looks of the garnish or leave it all together.

Score/Reasons: 9 - BRAVO! Finally, someone with courage to turn in a box od chicken with no apparent sauce on it. It has nice color and, if one looks closely, appears moist and juicy, even the greatly feared, rarely turned in by cooks, breast.

Suggestions/Recommendations: I hope this box scored well enough that the cook is encouraged to do it again. I wouldn't change a thing.

Nice presentation, a few extra pieces, but just doesn't have that "wow" factor. Also some charring going on = 7

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons = 7/the legs are burned at the end, the pieces don't go together in the box. It looks a little sloppy.

Recommendations = The placement is clever and could have been a winner, but the chicken is burned in places and not well placed.

7-does'nt look very appealing,

Lorne Rae

7. A very original arrangement. However, the left breast has BBQ sauce on it and the slices are not uniform in thickness. The legs are closely packed and the dark meat shows unevenly. Perhaps fewer or smaller samples in the box would provide space for a uniform arrangement and more pleasing pattern.

I like the layout of the product,probably a 9.

Score/Reason - 8; Nice presentation however the color of skinned pieces takes away from the visual appeal

Suggestion/Comment - work to obtain better color; protect ends and edges from becoming to dark

Score/Reasons = 6, the legs look dried out and the breast meat looks too white.
Suggestions/Comments = Less breast meat(6) would make the box look more uniform and allow the judges to see the face of the breast meat. Wrap ends of legs in tin foil to prevent burnt ends. A little sauce would make it look more appetizing.

Score = 9!

I love this box because this team went to the limit on their presentation. Chicken looks moist and not over-sauced. Good job!!!

Score/Reasons = 9 The cook went agains convention and used all of the chicken. neatly sliced breast, other parts arranged nicely--no over garnishing. Nice full good looking box!

Score 8
The breast would look better with the skin on or some sauce to make it look appetizing. The wing pieces should have been arranged better

7 - The skin is a little withered looking and the white meat a little pale, I'm also concerned by the look of the white meat at the very right - looks like it's a bit dry once you get past the gloss on the top.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, Interesting presentation, but difficult to pull off. A bit too much char on some pieces keeps this from being a 9.

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure each piece is of equal quality or you will be averaged down from your best type of meat presented.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks a wee bit dry, but still pretty appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = I like the variety and the arrangement; however, more care should be taken on the skin pieces on the bottom - looks jumbled. Not a scoring factor, but would make the overall box look better if more attention was given to layout.

I'm cunfused, chicken tenders and Cornish hind quarters? Doesn't matter, presentation is great using different shades and textures.
Slice on left kinda ruins the conformity. The shards of chicken here and there are quite noticeable.
I'm in for a very good 8.

Score = 8, Nice mix of chicken. Some of the legs look like they are burnt a little. Also the chicken looks a little dry.

8......Good color. Meat looks moist. Even cut slices. Need sauce on the bare spots.

Slice of breast on the left side looks like it doesn't belong and a chuck of meat missing on the right end slice.

Score 8.Even though the team tried to satisfy many judges the box just is overcrowded and looks disorganized.

7 - looks dry and uneven.

8 - Most samples appear dry. A couple of the legs appear very well done. A real full box of chicken.

I would score this box an 8. Chicken looks good, but skin is falling off.
Suggestion: Try to make the garnish come out around the outside of the box evenly.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
