Nice looking box. Chicken. It is what it is. Fun.
Solid 8.
(Dry rub dust up front is a downgrade.)

Just doesn't make me want to reach for a piece. Burnt sauce, uneven sauce.

I would recommend putting your breast slices in between the two rows of thighs. It will help balance the box out and there IS 6 pieces of breast slices right???

The sauce really needs to be more evenly applied so it doesn't look globbed on and the size of the thighs need to be more uniform. The breast slices are a nice touch but remember that there needs to be enough of each for all 6 judges because the judges are required to sample each different piece so you will have real low scores for taste and tenderness from the 4 judges that didn't get a sample of the breasts. I would give this a 7 for appearance.

I'd give it a 7. They look a little burnt and the sauce application is uneven. Also I don't see 6 samples of the breast meat. If it's included there should be enough portions for all judges.

Probably a 7 - i like it when the meat is on top of the garnish, this looks like the garnish is on top of the meat.

I also would like to see all six pieces of white meat.

The thighs look pretty good. Not real even, but look appetizing. I don't understand including 2 pieces of white meat when there are 6 judges. It looks a little dry. I would give it a 7.

7 - Sauce is uneven and messy looking. I suggest dipping the thighs instead of painting them. Box is uneven. Perhaps put the white meat in the middle instead of on the side.

Never seen this presentation, but I like it! Great view into what I'm about to take a bite of.

Might try a little harder to get the skin to not peel off as much, but it's not so bad.

Looks ok but not super great... I have never seen the cut chunks like that?? I guess they are just to show a cross section.

Looks above average, but several things keep this from looking better: First glance makes me want to be one of the first two judges into the box, so that I could try the breast. If you put something in the box, make sure there is enough for everyone! No DQ as there are 6 samples; however, only two get to try the breast. ALSO, I'm not crazy about the dark spots on some of the thighs, and the sauce could have been spread more evenly. One last thing, set the thighs on top of the bed of lettuce instead of within the bed for better visual appeal.

8 - Very Good

Minor criticisms

-skin does not cover thigh

The exposure of the 2 pieces on the right is so overdone that it just glares white. This is a photo thing, that being said I don't think those pieces add anything to the box. Also if they are thighs, ok, but if another cut then there should be 6 pieces.
The the thighs on the left are really not pleasing, the skin is pulled back, the sauce is blotchy and inconsistant

Meat thighs looks very tasty, but the sauce looks gloppy. Looks like good food, just not as pretty as it could be.

It would be a higher score but the two pieces on the right don't show anything attractive and they detract from the other 6 pieces. Not only that, but there appears to be only 2 pieces for 6 judges. why bother putting them in?

It would be an 8 without the slices on the right, and a 9 with more even sauce and more uniformity in the thigh size.

Score 7. The thights are oversauced hiding the meat and I think the white meat crowds the box and just make it less appealing. I'm sure the cook was just trying to satisify all judges, but I feel offering two meats also can cost the cook a chance to receive two different scores. Especially if one meat is drier or with less taste. I concetrate on a single meat. I also would be concerned that some judges might be left out with only two pieces of white meat.

Sauce is uneven and messy looking. Some pieces much darker than others. Also those 2 slices of breast are throwing me off.

Aside from the looks, I think serving 2 pieces of breast is going to mess with the the judges. If you want them to sample and score breast, serve 6 pieces. With just 2, you have no idea what each judge will score you on.

That skin is gonna come off in one piece when ya take a bite. i'm stumped by the 2 slices. You can tell they are thick so ther is onlt 2 for sure. Weird.

CBJ

I give it a 6
Skin only covers about 3/4 of the meat. Sauce doesn't look appealing, a few pieces on the top seem to have burnt spots.

Try and cook the piece so the skin isn't pulled back so far. It's a piece of chicken not a circumcision.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
