8--maybe a 9 in person but on here there just looks like too much sauce for me. Everything else looks great for me.

Does this look perfect? No. Does it look excellent to me? Yes and that's a 9
Hard to tell from the picture but if those are big dents in the center and right front pieces than it's probably an 8.
Probably a little too much sauce but I like the color. Excellent caramelization. Gimme

9- looks very appetizing.... Would look forward to being able to taste it later. I like the simple arrangement as well.

8 - would give a 9 if middle left didn't have such a light corner and there was less sauce on the thighs

Great looking chicken and presentation. Would have been a 9 if it had less sauce / glazing. Just way too much.

I would give it an 8. Maybe it's the picture but it looks like they have too much sauce on them for my liking. I might give it a 9 seeing it in real life.

Score: 8

I was going to give you a 7 because the chicken looks over cook, but I think it may be the lighting in the pic and actually will be lighter in color in person. Also not sure if its over sauced but I do have to say its very shiny. I do see you took time and detail in placing the chicken in the box. I like what you did with the garnish making sure it was even but not over powering your meat because after all the meat is the star of the show.

s/r,6/7 looks like the cook is trying to cover up something. way too much sauce,to dark ,looks over chaarred. almost looks like candy .

just looks darn good for mcchicken

Score 6. This chicken is so oversauced I wouldn't even know how to judge the chicken. When will the cooks realize than it is a meat contest and not a sauce contest. If it was necessary to "paint" sauce on this chicken, what was wrong with the chicken???

6 - Sauce everywhere...even the garnish has been sauced.
Uneven arrangement.

Score 9. This is a beautiful box. Chicken is uniform, evenly sauced, a perfectly arranged. Color is mouth-watering. Great looking box.

The argument could be made that they are a little dark, but my eyes say these are tasty lumps of chickeny goodness. Love the lacquer-like glaze.

I would give this box an 8. I love the fact the box is full, elevated properly, and the saucing is uniform. The constructive criticism I can offer is to pick the most uniform 9, and/ or try and use a trimming template (jig) to help start with uniform cuts. Nice job whoever you may be, and I hope I don't have to compete against you anytime soon

8 - Eventhough I'm not a fan of the chicken nugget look, I really like the look of this chicken. The color is good, and I think the amount of sauce is perfect. Looks very appetizing to me.

- If this looked like normal chicken and not like a bunch of nuggets, I would have easily given it a 9.

I always have trouble with these presentations. I like my chicken to look like it did when it came off the chicken. These heavily trimmed, striving for uniformity, pieces always make me think of Mcnuggets. That being said, it's a nice presentation, although somewhat oversauced. I'd give it an 8 because it does look tasty and I'd like to give it a try.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
