BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - Nice arrangement but the pulled in the middle looks dry to me.

Score = 9!

Love this presentation! Everything looks moist and there's not too much sauce. Just the right amount of bark...great job!!

9. Looks great!!

8 - The pulled looks a little bland, a bit of bark here or there would help the color pop and make it look more appealing. And I'm not sure about the pork cubes...

9.

Good looking box of pork. Only critique I have would be that chunk at the bottom right being out of line with the rest.

Steve Amos

8, nice looking box, even slices on the money muscle, the right amount of sauce on the pulled, but the chunks at the bottom are all over the place.

Try to line up your pulled so that the strips are going in the same direction.

What a nice looking box. Shiny and not too much sauce. looks eady to eat. Score 9

Score 9. Nice mixed of meat and a nice box layout. I hope the bright red color is just due to the picture.

Score = 9

Nice looking turn-in. The chunks at the bottom could use a cleaner and more uniform cut.

9......Great box of pork. All three types look moist and nicely sauced. Even slices on the M/M. Great care was taken in assembling the box.

Cleaner cuts on the cubes. they look a little ragged.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and very appetizing!

Suggestions/Comments = might want to go a bit lighter on the sauce, but looks great. photo is a bit pink..

Pros: Box is full of meat and the attention to presentation detail is apparent. Looks like you got good smoke on the meat and I see some spices on the chunks in front. I wanna eat!

Suggestion: The only thing that distracted from your box, was that the pulled meat "looks" dry. Could be the picture, but something to keep in mind.

Score/Reasons = 9/Meat is well placed in the box, it appears moist and succulent. The sauce doesn't appear to overwhelm the meat. I would definitely like to dig in!

8. Good layout. looks moist, nice placement. Good knife skills. However one of the seven cubes is away out of alignment.

Score/Reasons = 9, Looks pretty good. Make sure the ends are evenly cut into the same size cubes.

Suggestions/Comments = Just make sure the cubes are cubes and evenly cut.

8 Nice full plate. Color is good. Maybe a neater arrangement of the bottom cubes would help.

Tim - CBJ/KCBS
5/22/2014 12:58:13 pm

A solid 8, maybe a 9. Boxes I see in competitions rarely look this good. Even distribution of pieces, nice shine, moist looking.

One thought is the lighting is good for this photo. Some of the buildings/tents we judge in have very poor light and I imagine that affects appearance.

Score/Reasons = 9 - excellent

Suggestions/Comments = No comments needed. 9 all day long.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
5/23/2014 02:52:35 am

Score/Reasons = 9, ignored the fact that the white balance was off giving the orange tinge. Good looking pork.

Suggestions/Comments = Be careful with the three types. If one is off it will lower the score of the box.

Score/Reasons = 9 - Excellent looking trio of cuts. Moist looking, while not over sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = placement of "burnt ends" in a curve contrasted artistically with the slices of the top row. The leftmost cube could match the angle of the rightmost cube to improve it even more. Great box.

Bob CBJ/KCBS

Burnt ends could be a bit more uniform.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
