Although the char does add a level of flavor I personally believe that most judges would find that a mistake by not having consistent coloring on all ribs some charred some not.Would go 7.5-8.0 myself.

Score: 8 - Nice slicing job and arrangement in the box, color is good and I like the little charred spots, just a little bit too much sauce for me or I'd have scored a 9.

Ribs look good. Nice simple presentation. Sauce carmelized in spots but still a ................9

Score 8. The lack of balance between the front and back rows, the sloopy front row of meat and the sloopy sauce on the front row keep this entry from scoring hugher.

9 Very nice, generous offering. I like the color and slight burning.

7 - Back row looks dry. Don't like the orange color.

Symmetry is great, nice full looking box.
However, burnt offerings to the judge gods pry won't go over that well.
There's a fine line between character surface and charcoal and I think you just peeked over that line a little.
A 7 is generous.

8. More even cooking would bump this to a 9.

7 - nice to see 10 pieices in the box. Also nice to see ribs that aren't gloppy lollipops. Ribs appear a bit scortched in several places that prevents a higher score.

8 ,uneven color and charging sauce is not smooth and garnish is not evenly framed to showcase the meat.

Ribs look charred or burnt in spots. The sauce is uneven. The presentation is nice and the symmetry is spot on with uniform size and straight cuts. But I can't overlook the uneven color and burnt spots. This box is just average, a 6.

7-8: The ribs don't appear to be anything special - they don't make me want to grab one, but they look okay. However, the box is a nice presentation, and I can't find a lot to deduct.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
