Score 8. The slices look "proped up", by the ends. I would like to see the slices laid out and the ends seperated.

Good color on the slices and burnt ends. Front slice looks dry. Slices should be spread out to balance the box. All the burnt ends should be together in front of the slices. 8

Score: 7

The meat looks nice but wish it was laying down more so could see inside of meat and not just all bark. Dont like the few pieces of burnt ends up front and full row on back. My eyes keep focusing on the few up front and not the slices. I think they (burnt ends) could have been little more uniformed.

Good looking brisket. Looks a little discolored in spots, maybe from an injection. I'd give this one an 8.

8. Would like to see more of a slice. Would look better centered. Lots of meat in this box!

7. Those slices look awful thin. fan the slices so we can see the meat.

This looks like a face with a bow tie to me. Why put a bunch of burnt ends on top then 4 pieces on the bottom? I could see 6 nice pieces on the bottom then bonus on top but this is just confusing. It is also crooked in the box, not quite diagonal not quite straight. Symmetry is very important in demonstrating that effort was put forth in the preparation of the dish. That little bit extra leads one to believe the food is probably very good which leads to higher appearance scores.

8 quite possibly 9 in person
Would like to know if those are true burnt ends or not. More and more judges are commenting on the faux ends we are routinely getting. They are usually just burnt chunks of meat and are not as good as the brisket slices. It is affecting scores at events I have judged this year. (six so far) It happened this Saturday. There was a good brisket slice but the ends were awful. Every judge would have graded higher without the ends being present.
I feel that teams would be better served by not submitting burnt ends unless they are real ones

Looks great from what I can see. Would like to see more of the face of the slices, but what I see looks excellent.

Meat looks great, but would be better presented if it where on a slight angle.

I give it an 8

This box needs symmetry the burnt ends do not balance the box. Brisket pieces need to be at a lower angel so the judges can see them. All thet said 8

While the product looks good, the presentation takes away from how appetizing it looks. I dunno exactly what it is, but I'd call it "Box Design" - the way the meat is laid out lacks what I'd call good design. Maybe a later submission will highlight what I'm talking about.

9- LOVE THE PRESENTATION, CAUTION MIGHT WANT TO SPAN SLICES OUT A LITTLE MORE SO WILL HAVE SAME AMOUNT OF ROOM IN BACK AS IN FRNT, HOWEVER THIS WILL NOT DEDUCT B/C MEAT LOOKS MOUTHWATERING

Stephen - CBJ/KCBS

8 - The meat looks appetizing, but the placement is very distracting. You obviously had lots of good meat to give to the judges, but box still looks a bit empty. Fan the slices out more to show off the smoke ring and ensure that all slices are cut completely through. It looks like you have burnt ends that are very wide rectangles, you can reposition them vertically so they all fit on one row. If they look good on the sides then position them at the base of the box, if just the tops look good put them at the top behind the slices.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
