I would like,to see more than the tops of the, slices. Burned ends need to be placed uniformly. Watch the edges.

8 - nice looking box. Missing bark on 2nd slice and jumbled appearance of burnt ends kept if from being a 9.

8 would like to have had the slices laid back little bit more.

Score 9. The picture was not taken at a good angle to really see the brisket, but it appears to be a nice entry.

Meat has nice color. Would have liked the meat to be spread out so the slices could be seen. Burnt ends look good. 9

Score: 7

This is very close to being a 9 in my book but had to take off on few things. Meat looks very nice but could be leaning toward being too thick. Meat looks very uniformed placed properly in box but seems to be to far to the right margin. Top margin of meat is also further to the right than bottom margin. Also dont like how burnt ends are just scattered with no thought of how they are placed in box.

Comments: Maybe little more garnish on right side will help from the meat looking like its heavy on the right. I think just placing meat more in center could help that.

Can't really see too much of the meat of the slices, but what I can see looks good. Nice color on the burnt ends. I'll give this box an 8 from this picture. In person with a better look it probably would be 9.

9. Here's a box a TC can love. I'd like to see more of a slice. Flat appears buried in the parsley and needs to be a bit more centered. Burnt ends look good.

8. Arrange the ends a little better

This was a tough decision for me. I was waffling between a 7 and 8 for this because it is very nicely put together at the top but on the bottom of the box it looks like the pieces were literally tossed in at the last minute. I would suggest nicely lining up the burnt ends and spacing the slices a bit more to take up more space. Also it doesn't appear to be centered in the box. Overall it looks tasty but the execution is haphazard.

Box looks FULL, but it would be good to see the face of the slices (more than just a partial face on the first slice). If the BEs were all orientated the same way it would look better.
The meat looks good, but the overall appearance of the box leaves a bit to be desired. Are we truly judging the "appearance of the meat" or the "presentation"???

Solid entry. The burnt ends should be arranged with the same care as the slices have been arranged. -8-

This box needs to have the pieces of burnt ends placed neatly in the box and the brisket needs to be set at a lower angel so we can see it. Also I allmost never comment on or even look at garnish but this box is out of balance. 7

Really showing off all sides of the meat here - very easy to score this high.

9- VERY NICE BOX, I CAN ALMOST TASTE A PEICE , LOVE HOW YOU EVEN SHOWED SMOKE RING IN THE BURNT ENDS

Stephen - CBJ/KCBS

8 - Overall the meat looks very appetizing, the burnt ends more so than the slices. Very often burnet ends are placed neatly in line in the box, but I really like the placement of the six on the left. The two larger pieces on the right make the burnt ends look unbalanced. Either put all uniform pieces in or mix the two larger ones in with the smaller ones to make them less noticeable.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
