Score 8 I wouldn't count the sauce smear on the box as pooling, but I don't think the box was prepared for judging with any special care.

9 - Very good looking meat. Make sure you center it in the box and clean the edges. Some will deduct for that.

Is that sauce on the box?
Looks dry.

7 - The box simply has no "POP" to me. Although it had no bearing on my score, the smears on the back wall of the box should have been wiped off. Yes, I realize it could have happened during handling.

Score 8. Neatness in assembling the box lacks with this entry. I bounced between a seven and an eight, but gave the cook the higher score this time. It is apparent that this box wasn't put together with a lot of care. The sauce smeared on the back of the box, the meat laid in the back of the box, ect. This did not happen when the box was carried or the parsley would have also shifted.

Nice. I'll give the box smear to transportation. 9

Nice bark and smoke ring. Meat looks moist. Meat could have been centered better in the box and the juice wiped off the back.
Still a 9

Comment: I have to say out of all these Frostbusters brisket boxes, this has been the hardest one for me to judge. I look at it one way think of giving you a 6 (see reason below), then look at it another way look at giving you 8 so I am just going to settle for 7, but you seriously on the verge of 9.

Boxes like these hurt me because you are on the verge of 8's and 9's. I going to critic you hard so in hopes of you getting 9 in real cook off.

#1 THING: If you going to put garnish in box, make it look good. I am a garnish type of guy but they way it was placed in this box was not very good and almost made me want to give you a 6 but you know I am not suppose to take points away for garnish. Front of box garnish is good and right side is ok but what happen to the left side? and where is it in the back of the box? Also I think if you had it in back of box we would not see the grease stain in back of box because the garnish would cover it up. Case in point if you would not have point any garnish in this box, at first glance would have scored it an 8. So please work on garnish.

#2 Clean up stains on box. I am not suppose to take points away and I didnt but when I look at this box my eyes going to the stain first before I even see the meat. Also seeing that stain on the white box makes my eyes think the meat is greasy.

#3 Meat placement. I love how you have the meat laying on its side but you have the meat to far up in box. Come down just a little bit and it will more center.

Take care of those things and you have a 9 from me all day.

Good looking brisket. I'd give this box an 8.

It looks good overall but it is not centered in the box and there's a big splotch making it look hurried and not quite a 9. I'd suggest moving it down making a more even border around the meat.

Might have some flavor as there is some rub on it

Looks excellent to me! I like the smoke ring (although we DON'T judge that!!!). Looks moist (although I'm not crazy about the kinda orange color). Could be centered better in the box (equal amounts of garnish showing top and bottom) - but all these comments are just MINOR issues - FYI.

A nice thick brisket but it looks like it is coated in grease and has obvious slice marks. 7

9 - Looks moist. No visable fat. I want some.

Suggestion: center meat on garnish and clean up side of box

Felt like an 8 at first, but there's no problems and it looks like it's cooked perfectly. Burnt ends might have nailed it - they just look so pretty in the box.

7- SOME TYPE LARGE SPECKS THAT DONT LOOK APPEALING, BE SURE AND CLEAN BOX, BUILD UP GARNISH MORE SO MEAT ALMOST IS RIGHT AT TOP OF CONTAINER, I FEEL THAT I AM LOOKING IN BOTTOM OF A BUCKET AT SOME GOOD BBQ

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
