Score 9. Nice brisket. Good color, nice even slices, not covered in a sauce, just a good looking entry.

Very nice box. Front slice divot lost a point for me

Score 9 Not sure if this is overcooked and it looks a little thick cut, but overall a good presentation.

8 Nice look, moist, appealing, but possibly overdone, no way to know that however.

It looks quite appealing overall. Nice and tidy in the box, uniform gaps between the meat although it couldn't get a 9 from me due to some apparent inconsistencies in the distribution of the sauce.
KCBS prohibits judging the smoke ring since it can be artificially produced so it didn't come into play with my scoring but I really have to say that is one of the prettiest ones I've seen.

Gorgeous box. The meat looks downright perfect. The grain indicates great marbling and it does look very juicy. I find something slightly off-putting about slices that are trimmed to perfect squares but since that is the cooks choice. I'll put me down as a 9

7 - The post-cook trimming of this meat really hurts the score, in my opinion. Trimming the edges so much makes me think the meat was overcooked and crumbled at the edges. I also wonder how the bottom got so jagged, as if the fat was gouged out. Based on the top profile of the slices, the very bottom one does not appear to be contiguous to the slice behind it and frankly it is the least appetizing slice. The only reason this box gets a 7 is the slight sheen on the right side of the bottom slice tells me the meat is moist.

9 - I'm hungry!!! Careful about the bottom slice being so uneven...

Good, but lacks that "wow" factor. Maybe it is the photo, or maybe it is just me, but it looks like all the slices have a brown face except the first slice. Strange pink coloration too.

I would love to give this a nine. It seems the team should have hidden the front piece back in the pile. It looks like ther are horizontal cut line on it and that some of the bottom might have fallen off. The meat however appears to be perfectly cooked, looks moist and has some bark. Not talking about the smoke ring but I love the color of the meat as well. Easy nine without the strange front slice.
(Wish it had some glorious, yummy, perfectly rendered fat on it but that is personal preference) I really don't understand the brisket fat Nazis

8. Looks a tad dry, but it may be the photo.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
